What can cause these repeating issues and how do I repair them?

Hi,

I believe I have a Software issue.

PC suffers many symptoms.  I have a System restore point that allows me to get it up and running like lightning, but after owner goes on line a bit, PC's main symptom is that Semi-freezes, meaning I can move mouse, but they hourglass does not spin.  A key point is, that bringing up task manager and another tool show that there is no cpu usage.  That is what I cannot explain.  Everything is quiet.

                                                                  Some Symptoms:
1.  I can open some folders and SOMETIMES an item within the folder, but no further.

2.  I can open ALWAYS open something in the start menu, but cannot proceed after that.

3.  I can minimize/maximize a folder that is open, but I CANNOT CLOSE  that folder Using the red X or right-clicking the item in the task bar, then clicking "close"

4.  The frozen hourglass follows the mouse, but most of the desktop items just dim and do not respond.

5.  Anything I am able to open,  does not appear in process explore, or task manager.  ZERO resources are being used , but PC acts as if 100% usage symptoms are going on.

6.  A restart does not help these symptoms.

7.  System restore to a certain point, which is where I released the PC back to the owner last week, fixes it.  But then after I reset some items or install (not any more) a certain KB932823, it starts acting up

                                       
The system begins to act up after athat hotfix update, which I have now eliminated. I suspect AOL. I suspect AIM.
I put in 2 Firefox Extensions and trouble started, so I took one away and I am good to go, but something this owners family does causes it to freeze.  I am trying to isolate that but now I need the EXPERTS suggestions on how to isolate the problem that is causing this to freeze.  I have tried so much trial and error over 2 weeks, but something cause the lock up after the PC gets back to my friend.
                                                  QUESTION IS:
Can anyone tell me what I can do to try to ISOLATE and repair/remove the offending SW?

2 weeks ago,  I changed the PSU, the Memory, The cables.  Being a self taught hobbyist who does this for free in the neighborhood, except for parts, I am at a loss.   Could this even be a Hardware issue?
