Question

Power settings - POWERCFG query

Asked by: bluebirds1984

Hi,

I've found a few websites that show how to create power profiles for PCs/Laptops. I basically want to have certain power settings for all users using local policy to run the batch file containing the following code
"""""
POWERCFG /CREATE NewPower
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /monitor-timeout-ac 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /monitor-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /disk-timeout-ac 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /disk-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /standby-timeout-ac 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /standby-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /hibernate-timeout-ac 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /hibernate-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /processor-throttle-ac ADAPTIVE
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /processor-throttle-dc ADAPTIVE
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /
POWERCFG /SETACTIVE NewPower
"""""
I have a couple of questions.
What do the following do /processor-throttle-ac ADAPTIVE
                                         /processor-throttle-dc ADAPTIVE

I'm not bothered about the settings I can't change through the Power Options Properties, so can I leave those 2 out? the defauls will be fine.
Also I'd like to change the Advanced Power Buttons in the Power Options Properties to

Close lid - Do Nothing
Press Power Button - Shutdown
Press Sleep Button - Do Nothing

Is there code I can put in the script to change the above as well?

many thanks in advance

Ok, first question is answered here -

/processor-throttle-ac { none | constant | degrade | adaptive}
Selects the dynamic throttling policy to be used, if your microprocessor supports processor performance state controls, when the system is operating on AC power. The following table lists and describes each dynamic throttling policy option.

Value Description

none
Causes the microprocessor to operate at the highest performance state at all times

constant
Causes the microprocessor to operate at the lowest performance state at all times

degrade
Causes the microprocessor to operate at the lowest performance state, and further reduces performance by applying stop clock throttling as the system battery drains

Note
" This option is typically used when the computer is operating on battery power and is therefore seldom used with /processor-throttle-ac.

adaptive
Modifies the performance state dynamically based on the demand the system puts on the microprocessor

/processor-throttle-dc { none | constant | degrade | adaptive}
Selects the dynamic throttling policy to be used, if your microprocessor supports processor performance state controls, when the system is operating on DC (battery) power. The desired dynamic throttling policy is selected with one of the four additional switches listed under /processor-throttle-ac.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Am I right in thinking that adaptive would be the default setting? or could I just remove the

POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /processor-throttle-ac ADAPTIVE
POWERCFG /CHANGE NewPower /processor-throttle-dc ADAPTIVE

from the script all together?

cheers

I would say that the 'default' setting would depend on what power scheme template you have running normally... However I would think that adaptive would make sense, and I would leave it in - If you have no setting, it might count as setting it to 'none', which would mean that the CPU would be running at it's "highest performance state at all times".

So yes I'd say keep it as it is! Haven't found anything yet with regards to what to do when the lid closes etc... I'll keep looking!

Thanks, I will keep the text in the batch file.

I've found these websites with regards to power button/lid settings

and

if you or anyone can make sense of what registry fix I could do to change the power settings I'd be grateful!
