Every time I try to boot to normal Windows XP I receive a STOP 0x000000C4 (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x0000000,0x00000000) message with no driver identified. Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ Networking are fine. I have been troubleshooting for a week. Here is a sample of what I have tried:

* Initial bad memory removed (from 2GB down to 1GB) based upon Memtest86 tests (different STOP messages were previously appearing)
* Dell sytem diagnostics on processor, memory, motherboard and video card ran a dozen times and after different changes
* No minidumps are being produced, despite proper settings being turned on (have also attempted kernel dump to no success)
* chkdsk /f will not run due to OS hang on startup, but chkdsk /p and /r have been run on Recovery Console
* defrag has been run
* Windows Restore with Dell OEM XP Media Center 2005 CD w/ SP2 tried
* System Restore showing no safe points
* MSCONFIG loading no services and limited services along with /BOOTLOG (attached), /SOS, /NUMPROC=1, /PCILOCK, etc. have been tried to no success
* sfc /scannow does not work in Safe Mode (and searched for registry solutions to load necessary services, to no avail)
* Have run (and now removed) latest McAfee anti-virus and also have run Ad-Aware, Spybot and HijackThis (latest HijackThis log attached)
* RootkitRevealer does not work in Safe Mode
* Fixed Safe Mode to allow MSIInstaller and removed a number of potentially troublesome software, including NVidia drivers for video and Creative drivers for sound card
* Removed sound card and TV card from PCI slots (only video card remains)
* Ran a safe registry cleaner and selectively deleted entries
* Reinstalled Dell drivers using Driver Restore tool
* Attempted to reinstall BIOS but received error (bmp attached) -- latest BIOS from Dell is already installed
* Restored factory default BIOS settings
* Searched the internet in vain for solutions to this stop message with a first argument of 0x0000000
* No errors produced in Event Viewer any longer, except Safe Mode starting messages (cleaned logs and spaced reboots to ensure)
* Installed many of the latest Dell drivers for XPS 600
* Verifier.exe does not help since BSOD occurs before the "bad driver" is verified
* Can't update from Windows Update due to Safe Mode (or at least I get an error that I couldn't find any help with)
* Applied various patches

I know how to avoid bad spyware and viruses -- I'm certain these are not the cause of the issue. I have been all over the internet and cannot find another instance of a 0x00000C4 error with zeros for arguments.

I am currently considering trying an upgrade to XP SP3 (only haven't due to rampant reports of BSOD errors). If it doesn't work, I'll remove it and retry an XP repair again. If that fails, I'll reinstall Windows clean -- last resort.

Dell system no longer under warranty as of last April.

Looking for any other suggestions that I can do from Safe Mode. I've tried to include all relevant information, but since I've been doing this for a week, I'm sure I've forgotten something that I've done. Please let me know if you see something not on my list that I can do. Also, look at all my attachments before you say something like my Startup and Recovery settings are wrong, or "what do you see in Device Manager", etc. The exclamation point is probably due to being in Safe Mode and the proper service is not started to support it.Start Free Trial
