External DVD RAM incorrectly displays as a CD rom and will not read or write cds or dvds

Asked by cityqat in Windows XP Operating System, DVD Players & Recorders, Personal Computers

Tags: Microsoft, XP, home sp3, incorrect recognition of DVD RAM, LG, external DVD writer, LG GSA-E40L 18X, thinks it's a cd rom drive - won't read or write cds or dvds, "Incorrect Function"

After doing a variety of scans for malware, uninstalling and reinstalling both sp3 and dvd writer, reboot many times, registry scans and fixes, NAV, etc, external DVD RAM is incorrectly displaying as CDrom. I tried to change the properties, it changed itself back to the incorrect CDrom. It has recently been able to read DVDs, but still will not write to DVDs. Cannot read or write CDs. When I try to access the drive through My Computer, it has an "Incorrect Function" stop.

The DVD drive can be found at http://us.lge.com/products/model/detail/computer%20products_optical%20drives_optical%20drives_GSA-E60L.jhtml

Anybody have any ideas of how to get my DVD RAM to work again?
