Win XP gone wrong

Asked by Powerhousecomputing in Windows XP Operating System, SBS Small Business Server, McAfee Anti-Virus Software

I would like to try and avoid a format of this machine as it is still relatively new. I have a Dell Optiplex with XP. Recently it has started behaving oddly. Firstly McAfee no longer appears in the task bar. I cannot do thing like open and get into add/remove programs. i cannot open system properties. security centre etc. launching msconfig produces an egg timer for 3 seconds and does nil. Same story in safe mode. I have run a Trend HouseCall and also an Eset online-scan. These have found nothing. The machine was on sp2 last time i was able to check. It is on an SBS domain so i have most of the data redirected to server. Do i spend the 3-4 hours to rebuild the system properly? is there any way to do a windows repair that actually does something, as i have found this aproach can often just put one back by an hour with no improvement of the situation?Start Free Trial
