Windows XP keeps flickering on and off

I have a computer that has WindowsXp that is about 5 years old. Two days ago when you boot up it  Windows comes up but it goes to just the back ground - the icons and task bar all disappear for a few secnds and then they come back. THen it happens again in about another 10 seconds.
Have ran virus scan, updates.
Any ideas or is it time to get a new computerStart Free Trial
