Yesterday morning, my client updated SEC. Since then, we have had the following symptoms:
1) Computer hangs on "Preparing Network Connections"
2) When the user is able to authenticate, the computer hangs for a long time, often resulting in a blue screen without text
3) When shutting down, the computer hangs on saving settings
Some particulars:
1) SEP was completely uninstalled prior to installing the new version
2) running the Symantec Cleanwipe utility with a reinstall does not change anything
3) a complete uninstall of SEP removes all symptoms
4) if one unplugs the network cable from the client computer prior to booting, it is possible to boot without network resources; reattaching the cable allows LAN access
5) all machines had the un-managed client installed, i.e., we are not using the SEC server option in this install
6) one of these machines had the same upgrade four months ago, and it works just fine; none of the above symptoms
7) all client machines are running windows xp SP II
8) the version of Symantec Endpoint Protection is 11.01
9) I can't recall the build of Windows Server 2003
10) SEC is not installed on the server
A few hunches:
1) I suspect that this has something to do with SEC as uninstalling it allows normal functionality
2) this probably has to do with how SEC functions on the network--disconnecting the network cable allows for regular log on
I would greatly appreciate any advice that you have in this regard.
Best,
Fritz the Blank

I will look to see if I can fine v 10.x. The only reason my client upgraded was because his anti-virus subscription expired.
We installed this solely in unmanaged mode on client machines only and did not install anything on the server (thank goodness).
As an aside, one client machine gave the blue screen of death indicating the inability to find the OS. I'm going to have to take that drive out to recover the data....

Unmanaged clients automatically include the Firewall feature. The policy has 3 default rules, one of which is block all. If the traffic doesn't fall with in the other 2 rules, it will be blocked. The simpliest solution is to create an allow all rule and move it to the top of the ruleset, if you wish to continue using the unmanaged client.
I have finally been able to fix it as follows:
1) Try to use the uninstall option from Add / Remove Programs
2) Use the Symantec CleanWipe utility to remove <sarcasm>leavings</sarcasm
3) Reinstall using the custom install
4) Select all options with the exception of the network / hardware component
All worked fine after that.
I am splitting points but accepting jmlamb's solution as that might have done exactly the same thing. Hard to know, however, as it was near impossible to log on while SEP was installed.
Thanks to all who posted.

SEP firewall and network scanning is worst than a virus, that is my advice
it slow down all our computer older than a core2 duo about 10-20%
(unless you do not install network protection and firewall, turning them off is not an option, they still run)
we did not install it on our servers and will never do (according to the comments on internet)
SEP also block some programs from writing to the assembly
(basically, the registration of dll in the .net assembly)
if you want to install SEP with firewall option and network protection option, prepare for a wave of unhappy users
(got 50/140 unhappy users here)
we are lucky we saw it's problems before installing on our servers
