I am running Windows XP (SP3) and just started experiencing a weird problem with Visual Studio. Visual Studio runs fine as long as I don't launch another program. However, if I open another program (even opening a folder), VS closes. VS closes regardless of whether a project is open.
I am also experiencing a new quirk with 3D Studio Max 9. When using Max, if I launch another program, Video Post (an internal Studio Max dialog box) opens and occasionally will lock up. This Studio Max issue has also been occurring at work for several weeks and I am just now experiencing the problem on my home computer.
Both programs began experiencing problems the same day and my computer has always been extremely stable. The day I started experiencing these problems, I brought some 3D Studio Max files (zipped) home on my jump drive (I have done this many times before) and worked with them.
My first thought is that maybe this is viral but I cannot find any viruses on my system (using Avast, AVG, and Trend Micro's HouseCall). I had not installed any new programs prior to this problem.
I installed SP3 and other Windows updates in an attempt to resolve the problem but the problem persists.
Other programs seem to function properly.
Can anyone shed some light on what could be causing this problem?
Thank you.
