Hi all,
I've been tasked with getting WSUS working again on our network, as it had lain unused for quite for some time. Initial investigation simply revealed that all was working fine, but that the updates were set to only download once approved, and they were no longer being approved by anyone.
So that side is fine. The problem is, I have a handful of clients that simply will not report their status to the WSUS server. I've compared these machines to working machines, and can find no obvious differences whatsoever.
The AU settings are set through a GPO which is 100% definitely applying to the clients that are not working. When running a wuauclt /detectnow, the WindowsUpdate.log displays a chunk of info all with the same error code (fill info is attached as a code snippet)
I've looked up the error, and it means something along the lines of "Message was OK, but server could not process. Same message *may* be successful later". Obviously I've been trying for days, and it's never successful.
The main thing I'm wondering is whether or not this error is being CAUSED by the fact that the client has never reported it's status, or if it is THE CAUSE of the fact that the client has never reported it's status.
Things I've tried -
Deleting the computer from WSUS - appears again fine, still never reports.
Removing/readding to the domain - No joy
Stopping the AU and WMI services, deleting the contents of Windows\SoftwareDistributi
on and Windows\System32\wbem\repo
sitory, and then deleting the SUSClientID reg key. Restarted Services, still nothing.
Tried all of the above in the one go too (removed from the domain, logged on as admin, did the last part, then rejoined the domain, deleted comp from WSUS, then restarted to finalise the rejoining of the domain and restart the services etc) and still it hasn't reported.
I'm at a total loss now, this seems a relatively common problem (from what I can find on the net) which never seems to get solved, so I thought I'd try my luck here.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I'd be eternally grateful as this is driving me up the wall!
