No, it replaces OE6 as your mail client. It certainly can if you use hotmail, just start the add mail wizard and it will fill in the gaps for you.

EdmondClay,

At this time MSN doesn't allow it for free accounts but for a small fee you can upgrade your account.  That will allow POP3 access, which is what you would need to have OE get, send and manage the mail for that account.  Let me know if you have a question or need more info.  There are other, free online email providers that do offer POP access for free (e.g. Gmail).

Hi Edmond

I am not sure if you can still download Hotmail to OE like you used to.  OE itself still has the option.  As you step through the wizard in setting up a new mail account and you enter a Hotmail email address, the next step assumes you are creating an HTTP account and defaults to a greyed out POP3 or HTTP server for incoming mail as:
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp

You will find that this is still a preconfigured registry setting in XP even after installing SP3.  See Code Snippet.

Quite a number of years ago, Microsoft emailed all Hotmail account holders to say that any NEW accounts created after a cut-off date would no longer be able to download Hotmail messages to OE.  More recently, I received a message from them indicating that they were changing things so that Hotmail could no longer be downloaded to OE after the end of June 2008.  This applied to ALL hotmail accounts regardless of how long held, and their reason was software and platform changes to support the Windows Live Mail now the standard OE replacement in Vista.

I believe the date was the endof June, because I was conscious of the fact that Microsoft had flagrantly lied about this.  I was still able to download my old hotmail emails to OE a month past the cut-off date.

Some say this is just a ploy so that users of Messenger (now Windows Live Messenger) and those still preferring an OE-type interface for reading hotmail would have to suffer the indignity of the Windows "Genuine Advantage" checks failing on their pirated OS's, but I think it's just a big push to get people across to the "Online" web-based "dashboard" type existance where every photo, blog, thought, etc, is dumped onto Microsoft's servers instead of competitors' ones.  There's also the issue of pushing XML-structured applications.  They're all at it these days.  Windows XP waved goodbye to the standard Help dialog by making it a web page running in IE ather than a standard DLL or CPL applet, and XML takes it further.

Anyhow, I can't test whether my OE will still download my old hotmail emails, because I decided to give Windows Live Mail a whirl while updating Live Messenger.  It's a very good emulation of Outlook Express using most of the standard features and options, but it's not Outlook Express and doesn't interact with it.

One thing I am annoyed about is the way Live Mail assumes that I want to totally migrate to it, and dispense with OE.  I still want to fetch googlemail and my own pop3 ISP email to OE.  It changes file associations for the *.eml file type, so double-clicking on a saved *.eml file opens in Live Mail.  They stuck in a stupid [Default] value named "Windows Live Mail Mail Message" (no that's not an inadvertant double "mail" in there) under the standard key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message]
and associated it with Live Mail as:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /eml:%1
with the Default Icon:
C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe,-4

I had to mess about to reassociate it with OE, and there's probably more jiggery-pokery been done that I haven't noticed yet, so be aware of this if you decide to try out Live Mail ....... Hmmm.  Perhaps you know all this and is the reason why you are asking this question?  :-)

Anyway, the short answer is to try and see if it still works with the OE wizard if you specify Hotmail and an HTTP account with the "Server" as:
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp

I just pasted that into OE's address bar and was presented with a login request.

Title Bar:
Connect to services.msn.com
Dialog Text:
The server services.msn.com at hotmail.com requires a username and password.

I entered one of my Hotmail ogin details and was shown a further prompt for user name and password:

Title Bar:
Connect to bay101.oe.hotmail.com
Dialog Text:
The server bay101.oe.hotmail.com at hotmail.com requires a username and password.

This then opened another login prompt:

Title Bar:
Connect to loginnet.passport.com
Dialog text:
The server loginnet.passport.com at Microsoft Passport requires a username and password

This dizzy circle ended up with a "405 Error - Method Not Allowed" at the original URL:
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
This error (HTTP 405 Method Not Allowed) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but the site has a programming error.

Of course, that's in IE.  OE may still work with it.

Note:
Windows Live Mail configures Hotmail accounts created in it to use the Server:
http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v1.0.0/sync.aspx

That comes up with a 405 error in IE.

And what?  You're answer is hugely insightful and I'll work through it to try an learn something.  But my original problem now is back.  I want to create a free mail account somewhere that can be accessed by my OE6 accounts so I can have a prompt/real time notice of incoming mail from that free mail account somewhere other than my primary ISP.  And I still can't figure out how to assign more points for all this help...thanks a heap for your helpfulness.

Ooops.  Must have more coffee.  Thanks b01sc0tt, I haven't been here in a while, since the face uplift, and I suffer from ocular impatience.  Do I still earn points here for just breathing and being quiet?

Hi
Don't worry about trying to include me in a points split.  I strayed off at a tangent anyway :-)

Personally I would go with googlemail.  I decided to reassign my Experts-Excange email notifications to a new googlemail account after I got the email from MS telling me I would no longer be able to download otmail to OE.  The storage capacity is very large and, once you configure googlemail (in the webmail interface) to allow POP, then you can create your new OE googlemail account.

A few of important/useful notes about this, if you choose that path:

1. Log into your googlemail account, go to the user options, and open the "POP" (or similar) tab where you have to first enable POP:
see here:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13273
Save the changes and log out.

2. Create a new googlemail account in OE:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=76147

3. Repeated prompts for account name and password in OE even though OE is configured corectly:
https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
It unblocks something, and knowing this unlock page saves a lot of head-scratching.

4. Because it uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Ports: SMTP - 465, POP3 - 995, not all AntiVirus programs can be configured to scan incoming or outgoing mail, at least not without doing a bit of reading and testing.  Avast Free can't be configured to do this, and I'm still trying to get AVG Free 8 to scan properly on these ports.  As far as I understand, googlemail will work on SMTP Port 25 as well as 465, and therefore AntiVirus programs may work if set to 25, but your main worry is incoming POP3 mail.

Anyway, I hope this helps you to make an informed decision.

Whoops, I see you did include me in the points split.  Thank you :-)

BillDl, you deserve more because that's the solution I needed...
b01sc0tt:  Yes I found it.  Ocular impatience is the disease...and I haven't been here since the facelift or I've forgotten...and yes, there are some dumb questions...dumb is what causes questions...do I stll earn points here as time passes?  Thanks for everything you are all most generous with your time.

by: b0lsc0ttPosted on 2008-07-31 at 10:54:51ID: 22131934

Now can someone suggest a freemail POP3 account client that I can use?

The wording of that confuses me.  I will assume you mean a mail client (i.e. program) you can use for POP3 accounts.  A free one that is really good is Thunderbird (www.mozilla.com).  From the same people that brought us Firefox. :)  Personally I also really like Outlook but there is no way that can be called free and Thunderbird is a great alternative and completely free.  Another popular, free email client is Eudora (www.eudora.com) but I don't know that development on it is as active.

If I misunderstood what you wanted then please clarify and let me know.

do I stll earn points here as time passes?

Yes.  EE should still be increasing your points regularly.  I can't remember the exact amount and think it is weekly but you can look at the Help page (see the link at the top of the page) for details and specifics.  Of course you can also now buy points (for those times where you just need to ask a lot) and don't have a premium membership (which has unlimited points).

Thanks for the fun question, the grade and the points.  I'm glad I could help.

It looks like Experts-Exchange has sispensed with the free points hat you accrue with time just by being a member and not asking anything:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_23568419.html#a22079488

But, by registering as an expert and dedicating an inordinate amount of personal time (or only trying for 500 point questions to answer), you get unlimited points if you maintain a level of points:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi32

So, what's your specialist area of IT expertise?
Make sure it's not a dead one like Windows 98 ... Ha!  There's a couple of new ones in there.  Must dash  :-)

So with a max of 500 pts, I should spend at the going rate after accumulating 500 points?  Oooo, this is good news.  I've been hoarding for a rainy day...Gomenasai.  Could I then offer BillDL 100 points for all the help he has provided today?  I'm really happy with the results.  And getting results that make one happy in this day and age is precious.

His answer that included the google answer# on how to setup the OE account was priceless.

Hmmm, gomen-nasai about the typo's riddled through my comments and also the wrong experts-exchange link I posted instead of a help page.  Don't know how that happened - must have been on my clipboard from the last question I posted in.  It should have been:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi38
but that's sorted now.

Was there a mistake made when you closed this?  I really don't want to prolong this but since it doesn't seem like any points were added and now just one, new comment (and actually not related) is accepted I just wanted to make sure everything is OK and proper.  Keep in mind that your latest close doesn't "add to" what was done but now "overwrites" it so that one comment is the one and only answer and gets all the points.  I can overlook the actual comment that was accepted if the result was as you wanted.  Let me know if it isn't or there is a question.

K, here's the problem: I changed the point total and then accepted multiple solutions before I submitted.    The page can't seem to cope with multiple inputs.  So let's try this again...

BillDl,

I've got to post another question and would like to have you aboard if it fits ok for you.  My audio on a machine that I tinkered around with is gone.  The motherboard has the audio ports but the error message keeps asking for a sound card or drivers if I think I have one..."A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system."  Error Code: 2 WaveOut output v2.0.2a  error.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-08-06 at 01:27:02ID: 22168103

Seems like I missed the boat there Edmond :-)

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2008-08-06 at 02:10:57ID: 22168293

As you may have noticed I pretty much answered it on my own...just needed a little encouragement...I mean is it too much to ask of a Wizard to be thorough in the search?...so how's the wife?

I'm thinking about trying to setup a linux machine, then there's AutoCAD and some graphics software I should get back to, like Director and Premiere, so I'll prolly be back with more questions.  I was thinking you guys ought to have an expertsexchange for law questions.  They're making a fortune on prepaid attorney scams, which I tried and discovered that the onus is not on the attornies to perform.  They get paid monthly whether they answer any questions or not, soooo they can really be useless.
