Question

Video codec woes

Asked by: fritz_the_blank

Hello and thank you for reading my question.

I am posting a list of all installed codecs and etc. on my Windows XP SP2 computer. Quite often, I am unable to play simple .avi or .wmv files, and I suspect that I have some sort of a codec mishap. Would it be best to remove all codecs and install a new valid set? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Thank you very much,

FtB

I'm not that hot with codecs but the first thing I'd try is an overinstall of the latest Windows Media Player as this will reinstall the codecs it ships with.  (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx)

I'm pretty sure you will be able to forget most video woes if you simply download and install the newest K-Lite Codec Pack:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

Have fun.

by: fritz_the_blankPosted on 2008-08-14 at 17:02:30ID: 22235234

I was able to download the full package here:

http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

but I remain worried about duplicating .dlls or having more than one .dll attempting the same task. Is there a simple method of determining which of the above are unnecessary and could be removed?

Thanks again.

by: torimarPosted on 2008-08-14 at 17:50:18ID: 22235382

I have never heard of a case where installing the full package caused any such problems.

They will get installed in a way that only the newest and best dll will attempt a certain task. And duplicating dlls (which could rarely happen anyhow, because most of them end up in the \system32 folder anyhow, so will be replacing old versions, noz duplicating them) could only really be a problem if you have extremely restricted hard disk space. But we are only speaking of a couple of megabytes here.

I don't know of a simple way to determine which drivers could be removed. However, since all the required codecs seem to be in the codec pack, you might as well remove all codecs installed on your system now, then install the K-Lite codec pack plus the Microsoft codec pack.

Personally, though, I never did it that way. I always installed new codec packs over old ones and let the codecs sort it out with each other.

Thank you again for writing.

.wmv seem to be the largest problem. No matter what player I use (VLC, WMP Classic, WMP 11), I get intermittent stops and stutters; clicking to half way through a clip results in latency & etc. The same files work fine on my other computers.

That is what makes me think that something may be amiss.

Here is what I did:

1)  I downloaded CodecSniper
2)  I deleted all audio and video codecs
3)  I rebooted
4)  I installed the full version of the K-Lite Codec package.

Thanks to all for your help,
