The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How can I find out what process is causing the system to hang?

I am currently fixing my parents computer. I was able to remove the virus that it had by first scanning with McAfee's latest SuperDAT (using the command line scanner) to find the offending file and then using Unlocker to delete the file as it was in use even while in Safe Mode.

Anyway, I cleaned up the startup processes, etc with Hijackthis and then did a followup scan after deletion of the file with the SuperDAT as well as their fully updated Trend Micro scanner - nothing further was found. So, in theory at least, this system is now virus/adware free.

The issue that even though the system is clean, it's no longer throwing pop-ups around continuously or any of that jazz, it's still running ridiculously slowly. The computer is a P4 2.8 Ghz, and has 512 MB of RAM running Windows XP SP3. I would initially think that it's the amount of RAM that is causing the problem, but as of the time of this writing the PF usage is only at 367 MB, which leaves enough left over for whatever they are running.

So - is there a way to see what process is hanging the system all of the time? It's always acting like it's "waiting" for something. The CPU usage is around 3-5% most of the time, so it's not as if the processor is tied up doing anything. Regardless of the CPU usage being almost zero, and memory being available everything is taking forever to load.

Is something tying up the filesystem? I just don't know what the computer is waiting for all of the time.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

-Souter
