type cmd> enter
ipconfig /all

Open a command window and run ipconfig. Check that the gateway is set to the router IP address.

sorry had a premature post there :)
the gateway should be the same as the other machines that are successfully connecting to the net.
cheers

Do you have any firewall running , if so disable it
is it a cabled lan or wireless connection, if wireless check that MAC address filtering is not on & if it is enter the mac address of the offending system

74.125.19.104 try to open the www.google.com with IP address if it opens with the IP address then the
issue is with the DNS server is the clinet machine pointing to internal dns server if not try assigning the 74.2.2.2 dns server to the preffered dns server tab on the client i would be waiting for your reply

How is your router setup? What kind of internet service do you have? First go to Control Panel then Network Connections right-click your Local Area Connection then go to properties select Internet Protocol and press properties. What settings are in the properties? If you provide the output of "ipconfig /all" we will be able to see if you have a DNS server specified

or you could try running

nslookup www.google.com

and supply the output here

Do a ipconfig /flushdns. Also, I would run a spyware remover like spybot or AVG just to make sure that malware isn't causing the problem.

by: harris9999Posted on 2008-09-02 at 17:09:25ID: 22372948

the flushdns didn't do anything.  Tried Spybot but unble to download the updates to start the scan

by: dariusgPosted on 2008-09-02 at 17:16:03ID: 22372970

Try this, unplug the modem for the internet connection then plug it back up after leaving it unplugged for 20 seconds once all lights are back on do the same thing with the router. Do you have any virus or spyware protection on the system? Since you can nslookup www.google.com your DNS settings should be good.

by: harris9999Posted on 2008-09-02 at 17:24:51ID: 22373029

It is a combined modem.router I am using.  The PC in question is not mine and was happening at a friends house.  I have it here and it is not working on my router either.
When I boot up in Safe mode without any virus or spyware the same problem is occuring.

by: dariusgPosted on 2008-09-02 at 17:43:56ID: 22373094

Go to the internet explorer properties then go to connections select the Lan settings to see if you have any Proxy Server listed.

by: harris9999Posted on 2008-09-02 at 17:47:38ID: 22373110

No proxy server listed

by: dariusgPosted on 2008-09-02 at 18:54:11ID: 22373450

Have you installed XP SP3

by: xtravaganPosted on 2008-09-02 at 19:34:44ID: 22373611

Could you provide the contents of C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Sometimes adware/virus modifies that file, it should be about 20 lines of text mostly comments in it

by: harris9999Posted on 2008-09-03 at 02:50:03ID: 22375445

SP3 not installed.  Windows update has it downloaded and ready to install but it said Access Denied,
Should I sort that first?

Host file is clean
Only entry is for localhost

by: harris9999Posted on 2008-09-03 at 04:18:56ID: 22375948

I fixed the problem which was stopping SP3 installing, then installed SP3 and it is now working fine.
Thank you all for your help.

Hey harris Thats great it worked out , if you want to add DNS do the following
First go to Control Panel then Network Connections right-click your Local Area Connection then go to properties select Internet Protocol and press properties
Now you would see an option to select use the following dns server select that and put in 4.2.2.2
if that works this means that the internal dns server has some issues but in this case you dont need to do that now
