The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows XP installation hangs for an hour while trying to load the Default User hive

Asked by swatuser in Windows XP Operating System

First, let me give you a few specs on my windows image :

- I'm restoring a ghost windows xp image that is syspreped.
- It's a 2 partition image. The user profiles were moved to my D:\ partition instead of the traditionnal C:\.
- When i reinstall, I just dump the C:\ partition. That way i keep all user related files and configurations.

Here is the problem :

In about 5% of my tests, when i reinstall the C:\ partition, the windows installation hangs for about an hour. When i open up the setup log, i can see that it hangs in the "Updating server profile directories" section. The time stamp actually shows a one hour difference with the line right over it! It says right after : "Setup failed to load Default User hive (RegLoadKey failed 1019)".

A weird thing also is that even with this error and one hour lag, windows seems to install fine. No noticable problems after installation.

What I'm trying to find out :

1.  What is setup doing during this setup phase?
2. What should i check after the installation to make sure there are no problems?
3. How do i avoid/stop/fix this installation glitch?

I have attached 2 log files (2 different computers) to this post. One has had the problem and the other hasn't. Please refer to the "BEGIN_SECTION,Updating Server Profile Directories" section of the log files to compare the errors.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help!
