Question

Offline file synchronisation errors

Asked by: EMBARKS365

I am experiencing offline file synchronisation errors with a users laptop.  It seems that whenever he creates files offline on his H drive (a home area on our network) which he synchronises for offline use, he receives errors.

The error occurs after the user has been working offline and created files in the directory, when he logs back onto  the network he receives access denied errors when windows tries to synchronise the files back to the file server (I have attached a screen shot of the synchronisation results tab showing an example of the errors) .

I have tried a few basic things like resetting the offline cache and checking the NTFS permissions on the file server, but the permissions are fine and although resetting the offline cache clears the error, it comes back next time files are created offline.

Encase you are unable to see the screen shot here is an example of the error: -

Offline Files (\\<file_server>\<path> on <site> Local File Server (<server>)): Access to '<file>' is denied on \\<fileserver>\<path>

The only laptop I have seen this error occur on is the Toshiba R500 which has a custom build.  It has happened to 2 other users both with this model of laptop.  The file server is built with Server 2000 Standard edition.  The only resolution I have had so far is to re-build the laptop, I would like to avoid this option and only carry this out as a last resort.

Any help in troubleshooting this would be much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing your responses

Kind Regards

Ben

I take it you have already tried "gpupdate /force" from a DOS window.

I would suggest saving the files that are stored locally that have not been sync'd yet someplace else and then deleting the H drive and remapping.  We use scripting to control the "home" file location, so remapping and restarting should activate the sync process automatically the next time the user logs on.

Having read some other blogs on this is a problem with the biometric software installed on the Tosh laptop.  It is only happening for 2 users that have a bespoke build from our standard image.  Funnily enough the security software is the common dominator!

The users effected have a work around so it's not too urgent at the moment.  I am going to add the security software 'True suit' to a test machine I have in the office and try to replicate the problem (as soon as I get time!).

Apparently is has been happening to Dell laptops, there is a document security module installed under the security software 'Embassy Trust Suit'.  The module causing conflicts with Windows offline file synchronisation, the work around is to remove this module.

Thanks for the comment Rick, however I don't think this is a GP issue.  I don't think its related to re-mapping the H Drive, this is done via a GPO from the domain level and is dependant on what OU the user account sits under.  As no other users are effected by this problem I'm reluctant to believe there is an issue with user document mapping, however I have re-initialised it just for peace of mind.

I didn't know you had installed the Embassy Trust Suit (sounds like part of either a pre-load or the biometric software).  You may be on the right track since removing the module gives you a workaround.  We also have the biometric software for IBMs and are having no sync problems.  You think Dell might be releasing an update soon?

Found the following comment here:  http://forums.techarena.in/windows-server-help/942215-2.htm

"Turns out it was the Document Manager portion of the Embassy Wave Systems suite that was impacting file synchronization. The quick way to verify this was to just end the process WavXDocMgr via task manager and then try to sync. When doing this, the sync should work now manually and during logon& no more access denied errors. The service can be disabled via msconfig > startup > uncheck WavXDocMgr and reboot. This might not be the cleanest method but uninstalling the entire suite or just the Doc Manager portion produced Msiinstaller issues. I am sure they could have been resolved via a reinstall/uninstall or manual uninstall. I just cleared the service from startup and rebooted& it did not impact startup by doing so this way. Everything worked fine with CSC and sync after.

Forums that led me to troubleshooting the Embassy Wave Systems suite:
