Question

Extremely Slow Network

Asked by: Ryan_R

Hi Guys

I've been rebuilding a laptop (Toshiba R200) and have been struggling to install the SOE software on it from our network share (at work). While the Internet browsing is fast over wireless, and general processing speeds are fine, browsing the network via cable is just extremely slow. I tried to copy a 12mb folder over to the desktop: it spent 2 mins saying 'Preparing to copy', copied about 15% of it and then bombed out saying The specified network name is no longer available.

At this point in time I haven't joined the laptop to the domain - doing so took too long and just hung prior to re-imaging it. The network port/cable is not faulty - as I use it all the time for other machines that I build. The ethernet adapter isn't at fault, since I dumped a Ghost image on it via the same network interface/cable at high speed.

I've updated the BIOS, searched for newer drivers for the LAN adapter (but could only find ones for Wireless), I've turned off the option to automatically search for mapped drivers and printers, I've updated Windows and tried installing SP3 over XP Pro x86, I've ensured the clock is set correctly, but nothing has helped.

Google searches have only led me to questions where network browsing is OK but the Internet is slow.

If you could help fix this that would be great.

1) Try a PCMCIA/ pc card or Even an external USB NIC to see if they work faster.

Is the wifi connection faster than the wired one ?

Have you run any speed tests.

speakeasy.net/speedtest is good.

I would also rebuild the TCPIP stack

XP TCPIP fixes reset NIC and TCPIP reset  Fix TCPIP reset
From johnb6767

What I like to do on any network problem....Is to reset it ALL....

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh firewall reset
netsh winsock reset

Then remove ALL NIC's from the device manager..
In the Device Manager, select View>Show Hidden Devices

(If the Show Hidden devices is not presetn, do the following command from a command prompt..)

start>run>cmd
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

More information on that command here....
Device Manager does not display devices that are not connected to the Windows XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317518/en-us

Go back to Network Adapters, and make sure your adapters are all gone, including any older ones. (there will be several ' miniport' devices that are not able to be uninstalled....)
Once they are all gone, reboot and let Windows reinstall them...

Thats a total rebuild of your network connections, to hopefully correct any problems with Basic connectivity.

I hope this helps !

Thanks for the info, but it didn't help

The adapter is a Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

While I have some PCMCIA cards, they all require 2 slots, and this being a Portege it only has 1.

verify the link speed and duplex of nic card

try changing the mac address and reboot.
nic card properties >advanced > network address.  use current mac address but change first digit.

When I go there the setting is at 'Not present' and the box above it is blank. Could be the problem. What do you suggest I enter int he box (syntax)? I belive the MAC addresses are listed underneath the laptop.

by: simpsonehhPosted on 2008-09-09 at 18:43:31ID: 22433961

click start >run >type in cmd and hit enter
at the black window, type ipconfig /all and hit enter
the mac address will be listed as a 12 digit letter/number combo.  The line is called "Physical address"

Yes, not present is correct (does not mean anything is wrong).  select the box above it and enter in the mac 12 digit number.  remember, just change only one number and write the original one down so you can change it back it this solution does not work.

Ok so I have changed it from 00-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX to 10-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX

No changes in speed/responsiveness

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-09 at 18:57:26ID: 22434014

ipconfig reflects the new MAC address also

Are internet speeds slow over the wired connection as well?  Or is it just when you're browsing network shares?

Have you tried disabling the WebClient service?  Because that's been known for causing problems like this.

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-09 at 19:32:22ID: 22434194

Speeds slow browsing network and web on cable - everything fast on wieless

Will try and disable that service now

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-09 at 19:42:00ID: 22434306

That didn't help either

Does the same thing happen in Safe Mode with Networking?

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-09 at 20:08:41ID: 22434536

Yes

by: Crash2100Posted on 2008-09-09 at 20:23:14ID: 22434713

That makes this sound like it may be a hardware problem.

What does the Device Manager list as the wired network adapter?

I'm currently restoring the ghost image of the previous user of this laptop to see if the problems persist on there. The image is being sent via network cable at a rate of 190MB per min (just over 3MB/sec)

by: simpsonehhPosted on 2008-09-10 at 06:07:33ID: 22437879

is the nic set to auto or 100 full duplex?

are your ip and dns settings correct?

tcp/ip checked under cotrol panel > network connections > advanced >advanced properties

try an older driver, maybe the new one is flawed.

are there any bios options that are affecting the nic?

by: CoreyMacPosted on 2008-09-10 at 15:28:44ID: 22443822

Try pinging the default gateway with large packets and see what happens.

Does it drop any packets?

Try pathping as well for the same ip address.  (assuming 10.10.0.1 is your default gateway here)

ping 10.10.0.1 -l 1460 -f -n 100
pathping 10.10.0.1 -n

What are the results over wired versus wireless?

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-10 at 16:23:33ID: 22444110

I've logged a Service request call with Toshiba to come and fix it tomorrow, but I have already done a continuous ping to another machine and after a few mins only 58% were successful - the other dropping out.

Settings are from the DHCP server and are correct. NIC settings are set as standard (auto) and have also tried manully setting to 100mbps Full Duplex

SOunds like a bad NIC...

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-15 at 18:53:17ID: 22484284

I've had the entire mainboard replaced by Toshiba Support and have used the Recovery CD to back to the earliest image available and the problem persists - any other ideas?

by: Ryan_RPosted on 2008-09-15 at 19:15:58ID: 22484359

I've fixed it by installing the drivers listed here:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/marvell.htm

One thing that might be notable is that the setup said it was installing 'Miniport drivers', which previously did not show up in Device manager when a previous comment directed me there and said that there should be a number of them there that can't be removed.

If you would like points, let me know and I'll be happy to award them, otherwise I'll just close it and accept this comment.
