How can one find out when(and possibly how) a windows xp machine booted or restarted?

From the command prompt, run the following
systeminfo | find /i "Up time"

A tool which is cool that has more info is uptime

if you switch on the auditing os system events then this is recorded in the security log in event viewer.

To switch it on type GPEDIT.MSC at the run command
Go to  "Local Policies"->"Audit Policy", you need to enable "audit system events" for SUCCESS

Unfortunately the action is not retrospective so it you switch this on now it will record fuure events, but not what has happened prior to enabling the feature.

Sorry Anil, it didn't work....neither does uptime with Windows XP(it says it works with windows NT and 2000).
KPCT's solution is obviously for all future events, which is great, but I still don't have the info about when my machine rebooted(which is what I need to find out)

Anil, it worked on one machine, but didn't on another(where i had tried initially)....dunno why it happened.

Tried it on another machine Anil, and it worked! No idea why it didn't give the info on the earlier one!

At the cmd prompt type
net statistics workstation
- look at the top - it will say Statistics Since....
that is the boot time

but the only way to keep a log of reboots is to enable auditing as i described
