The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows Add/Remove Item Appears Sporadically

Asked by ginovino in Windows XP Operating System, System Utilities, Microsoft Windows Operating Systems

I had installed MOTOROLA PHONE TOOLS software inorder to maintain a manageable database for my Verizon Motorola Razr 3m Cell Phone.

The process requires the cell phone to be attached to the PC via USB cable. This software was installed and I keyed in some 90 names, tel #s, addresses. Then it is uploaded to the cell phone, where it remains until you require a future update of information.

The software communicates to the cell phone and it all ok, the database opens for updates. This program is somewhat flakey. You must use exact same USB port the software was Primarily installed on or the units will not sync! I have been down this road several times with Motorola techs. So if you forget( as I did) the units won't sync!

Recently, I attempted to update information and ran into a connection problem. After several calls to Motorola Tech and hours installing and uninstalling their software, USB drivers, and modem drivers, I ran into a major glitch! The Motorola Techs asked me to remove the software and they provided me with an earlier software version to do a reinstall and then when operating correctly, introduce an update. Imagine my surprise when,The add/remove selection showed TWO(2) sets of Motorola Phone Tools appearing! One set had the correct Repair - Remove selection and showed the program size of 76mb, the other just showed remove without any size.

I was able to remove the former, but the later keeps popping up a request for a .MSI install file disk to remove the item.

The item was originally installed from a downloaded file.

The Motorola folks advised me to remove every single reference to the Motorola Phone tools. I spent hours scouring the drive for any possibilty of this program. I found pieces of it in the weirdest places. Even found it under names other than "Motorola Phone Tools". It seems the Original version I installed last year used some other names.

I used the MS instruction ID# 247501 & 314481 to remove the appearance via the registry. I was unable to find anything with that Motorola Phone Tools name appearing in the registry. I have tried to use the Microsoft .MSI uninstaller tool several times and it did not fix the problem.

I tried the REVO uninstaller, it seemed to work sometimes and other times appeared sporadically. I tried to delete it, rename it, no matter what I did, it returned, even with the changed name!!!!

I used the add/remove features of other software; Crap Cleaner, Easycleaner, Addremovercleaner.exe, Regseeker, Unclean. I may even have forgotten some.

what did I miss? Why would it return, disappear, then return again? Most of the times with REVO and Windows Add/Remove.

I am concerned that should I reinstall the latest version of the Motorola Phone tools software and drivers, that I will encounter the problem that got me here.

Suggestions please! as Time is of the essence
