Question

Windows not booting

Asked by: wesida

Hello,
I have this computer which when i got it kept saying that it is unable to find any harddrive. I checked the Motherboard battery (replaced it with another one) but still with the same problem. As far as i know the computer was working properly and suddnley it forze and when the guy tried to boot it it kept giving that message.
I then tried putting another HD that i know is working (The drive has xp on it), and instead the computer gave me another message saying that it is unable to find any operating system on the device. I moved the jumper on the back of the HD on all places (Master, slave etc...) but still same problem.
also if it will help, everytime i swtich harddrives (The main one and the one I used to check the computer), the Bios tells me that a new device is put it and shows the specifics of the Driver (meaning that it is communicating with the drive.)

sorry if the question is put in a way that is confusing

The copy of windows on the new drive will only run properly if the computer that you took it from is the same hardware configuration as the new computer. Try reinstalling windows on the new drive. If the computer only has one HD in it then set it to cable select.

I actually tried installing anew copy of xp on the OTHER drive but when i get to the point where i need to format the HD (Blue Screen Setup) it told me that there were not any HD detetcted. I also Switched to another IDE cable but with the same problem

then i would do this : disconnect all other devices and cards
test ram and disk (download ubcd, and run memtest86+   + the disk diag needed)
also, try rersetting the bios (take out the bios battery)

The first drive is fried. Install the second drive (or a new one). If you have an 80 core cable you can set it to cable select, otherwise you must set it to master or single. Enter bios, run autodetect if it is there, in any event, ensure tha the drive is correctly detected on the first page. Save and exit. Install XP. If you are using the drive with XP on it already and you wish to preserve the program installations on it, perform a repair install to renew the hardware associations.

Cable Select was there before the 80-strand cables, however CS can only be used with controllers that accept it. When in doubt go for Master/Slave system and jumper as instructed on the drive.

Use BIOS setup to find out if the hard drive(s) involved are properly detected before you try to install an O/S.
