Question

When software installs XP does not allow .lnk files to be added to submenus

Asked by: FUROG

When I install software on my XP SP3 Toshiba laptop, it only places the app name in the Start/Program Files menu. All the submenu links do not populate and only an "empty" placeholder is displayed.

It sounds like your profile may be corrupt.  Create a new user though the control panel and log in as that new user to see if the same problem occurs.  If there is no issues with the new user then you'll need to transfer all your settings and files to a new clean profile.

I tried the new user and it did the same. I went to My Computer properties..clicked the Advanced tab and I see 2 profiles when I should only have 1. The one profile name changed when I deleted the user account to "Account-Unknown". I am not able to delete here as the delete button is disabled.

We don't want to delete anything at this point.

If the issue sin't in the profile then we need to repair your system.

Put your XP CD in your CD ROM drive and then click on Start and Click on Run.  Now type in;

sfc /scannow

This will take an hour or so and should repair your system files.

It doesn't run when I type it in the Run box. I opened cmd prompt and it says "you must be an admin running a console session in order to use the windows file checker utility"

Are you using the new account that you created?  If so go back to your original account and run it there.   Are you running XP Home or Pro?

by: FUROGPosted on 2008-10-16 at 06:16:57ID: 22730463

Went back to original account and ran it from there. The scan worked but the sublinks are still not showing on the menu after I install software.

Running XP Home

PS..thanks for the help!!!

The next step is more painful.  You have to boot off your XP CD and run a repair.  Make sure you have a backup of your computer and your CD key before you start the repair.  During the process if you hit the wrong key then it could reinstall windows instead of repair it.  After you run the repair then you'll have to reinstall all your windows updates.

Here's a link to walk you through the repair process.  Print it out and follow along.

hmmm...I don't have the original OS disk. It was a laptop purchased from a friend that lost it. It is not bootleg because I get the Windows updates. So this isn't an option to repair with the disk.

I used another XP Home disk for the sfc /scannow

If doing a repair isn't an option the next thing to try is to reset the default directory that is used to create the Program file tree.  It's located under c:\documents and settings\default user.  Try renaming that directory to default user.old.  Then create a new user again to see if that recreates the folder structure.  If not you'll have to try copping that directory (c:\documents and settings\default user) from another computer.
