Are you able to plug another machine into the router to eliminate an issue with it? If the other machine doesnt work then I would suggest resetting the router to factory defaults

by: edster9999Posted on 2008-11-25 at 02:15:54ID: 23033459

Does it get an IP address ?

If you do can you ping the router ?  Other internal address ?  External address ?

Did the other machine work ?

Do you have any mac filtering (security to allow only known machines) on the router ?

Does the router dish out dhcp if not you will need to give it an ip address

by: sbkcompPosted on 2008-11-25 at 02:20:13ID: 23033476

Do you know the IP Details of the router?  If so then input a static address in the PC.  I would suggest that DHCP has stopped on the Router or is not configured.

Please ensure you enter the IP Address of the PC, Subnet, Default Gateway and the DNS Server(s) if you do not know any use:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Cheers

Thanks for your suggestions,

The problem is not with the router, I can plug another machine into the same cable, and it connects immediately.

The machine with the problem is not getting an ip address. If I try to give it a static IP, that is in range, I still cannot access the network.

There is no filtering on the router, I have also disabled all firewalls.

Maybe it's something related to SP3? Have you tried downgrading?

by: edster9999Posted on 2008-11-26 at 01:14:51ID: 23040548

basic tests -

1. do you see lights on both end when you plug in cable and power on ? (assuming there are lights at both ends)

2. is adapter enabled.  If you go into properties for network you see a list of connections.  The one for the network adapter should not have a red cross on it.  If it does, right click and select enable.  Maybe while you are in here do disable and enable again just to reset it.

3. you say you have not got an IP.  Set it for DHCP (get an ip address) and go to DOS.  Type in
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig

Does it have an IP now ?

If no - then check the router gives out DHCP and still has IPs left in the range.  Check there is no mac filtering turned on again.
If still no address then you probably do have a hardware fault.  Check the above steps again.  If that doesn't work then you may have a faulty nic (network card).  Try removing the driver and putting it back in again.  Try moving it to a new slot in the pc (while powered off of course)

If yes - check the settings.
ipconfig /all

It has an IP, but is it in the right range ? Right subnet mask ?  Right default gateway and DNS ?  (probably the IP of the router).

If it all looks good then ping the router.

drop to dos and type
ping 192.168.1.1    (or whatever address the router is on)

Does that work ?
No - Go back to step 1 again - you have missed something.
Yes - Ping another pc on the internal network.  maybe plug the other one in at the same time and ping it.
Ping something on the outside.
ping www.google.com
(or similar)

So if the cable and the router are OK, you are down to a PC related issue.

Does this PC work on anoter switch / hub?  do you have a spare PCI NIC?  If so plug this in.

Is the current NIC on board?  Is it enabled in the BIOS?

Cheers

Try changing the MAC/Local Administered address in the advanced properties of the network adaptor. Just make up an new address and see if this has any impact

Thanks again,
Uninstalling SP3, did not fix the problem, I honestly thought that would have been it

both ends of the cable are lighting up

nic is enabled, I have even tried another one, updated drivers etc etc.

the IP i have is in the 169. range, which is a local ip to that machine.

Forcing the IP address also does not allow it to connect

by: edster9999Posted on 2008-11-27 at 04:23:45ID: 23049461

well if all that is correct then you do have a firewall issue.  Either you have mac filtering on the router end or you have windows firewalling (either built into MS or another product) blocking this connection.

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2008-11-27 at 14:43:13ID: 23052433

the only firewall I am running is the windows firewall, and I have disabled that.

I have checked the router too, and there is no filtering there either.

This is nuts. I really don't want to reinstall.

Test the pc on another system.  can you get an IP from a different network.  That then shows you if the problem is with the pc or the network.

Has this PC ever worked on this network ?

by: RedKelvinPosted on 2008-11-28 at 05:02:46ID: 23055211

yes the pc used to work, up until a couple of weeks ago, will try another network....cheers
