hal.dll install

I have a dell dimension 3000 that just came into my computer shop, running Windows XP home edition.  It does not boot, but gives an error message about hal.dll.  I can boot this machine from a CD, the ultimate Boot CD for Windows, so I am able to boot the machine that way, in a limited fashion.  I have downloaded hal.dll from the web, and I was able to install it on this broken machine in the right place (c:\windows\system32).  I replaced the hal.dll that was there.

This didn't work.  Now what?  Please help.

One problem is that when the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" message occurs, it may not because of that circumstance; it can also occur if the hidden boot.ini file in the root folder is corrupt.  See this page:

Missing Windows Hal.dll vile

If above fails, setup a Windows installation and select Repair inside the installer menu

Fixed it. We are not sure if it was the bootcfg /rebuild or the chkdsk /r. We did both before rebooting normally. Thanks so much!
