Question

Enable Terminal Services ActiveX Client control

Asked by: jacobbarnett

Hello ~

I am using XP SR-3 and attempting to log onto a Terminal Services Remote Desktop which I know is configured and working properly.

When I go to the site, I receive the following error message:
======================
ActiveX control not installed or not enabled

The Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not available. Before you can access remote programs and connect to remote desktops through TS Web Access, you must install and enable this ActiveX control.

If your computer does not have the correct version of the Terminal Services ActiveX Client control, you must download and install an update package. To learn about this update and to download the installation package, visit this website.

If you have already installed the correct update package, you must enable the ActiveX control. To do this, follow your browser's instructions to manage add-ons and to run ActiveX controls. When you enable the ActiveX control, you may see a security warning. Before you continue, make sure that the publisher for the ActiveX control is Microsoft Corporation.

After you install the package or enable the ActiveX control, you must refresh this Web page.
======================

Looking in:  IE 7 -> Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons, the Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not listed as an option to either enable or disable.

Attempting to install Set up remote desktop connection from my XP CD, I am informed that the OS already contains a built-in version and may not be installed.

Checking: IE 7 -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Internet -> Custom level -> Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins = ENABLE

My question is: How can I enable Terminal Services ActiveX Client control?

Many Thanks, Jacob

I've seen this issue happen when the server is not a trusted site in IE.
 Select "Tools", then "Internet options".
 Select the "Security" tab.
 Select "Trusted Sites".
 Click on the "Sites" button.
 Add your remote access web site to the list of trusted sites. You can add both
    http://server.com
    https://server.com

Slobodnik ~

Thank you for your reply.  When I add the server IP to the "Trusted Sites" list I continue to get the same error.  I did restart IE.

What version of Remote Desktop do you have installed on your computer and what is the OS of the computer you're trying to connect to?

Hmmmmmm, good questions!

I'm using Shell & Control v6.0.6001 of Remote Desktop on my computer.

I am connecting to Windows Server 2008 - standard

Actually, when I use the Remote Desktop application (mstsc.exe) everything works fine.  I'm able to log in and use the machine.

What I was attempting to do is log onto the server using my web browser, IE7, pointing it at the IP address and the /ts directory.  The error is displayed when I attempt to log on via IE7.  I'm thinking this may not be an option.

Hi Jacob,

XP SP3 disables RDP/TS ActiveX Controls by default. Here is how to enable them back.

sramesh2k,

Thank you for your suggestion.  I removed the registry key specified above and restarted my computer.  However, the re-install of Remote Desktop Connection from my XP CD, I am informed that the OS already contains a built-in version and may not be installed.

Attempting to browse to the TS server, I receive the Windows Server® 2008
TS Web Access error message: ActiveX control not installed or not enabled......

Still: Looking in:  IE 7 -> Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons, the Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not listed.

Hi Jacob,

You may have to enable another GUID. See if comment #6 in the link (which I posted above) helps.

Hi sramesh2k ~

In addition to deleting the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Ext \ Settings\{7584c670-2274-4efb-b00b-d6aaba6d3850}

In "Method 2", I also deleted the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Ext \ Settings\{9059f30f-4eb1-4bd2-9fdc-36f43a218f4a}

In step 6 and restarted my computer.

Attempting to connect to the server via IE7, I still receive the error:
"ActiveX control not installed or not enabled

The Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not available. Before you can access remote programs and connect to remote desktops through TS Web Access, you must install and enable this ActiveX control...."

Additionally, attempting to reinstall "Remote Desktop Connection" from my XP Professional CD, the same error: "...OS already contains a built-in version and may not be installed."

I continue to be able to access the target server via Remote Desktop Connection.  I am just not able to access it via the IE7 interface.

If you are still having an issue, I have found that resetting the web settings will often correct this.

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced: Click to restore advanced settings and then do the reset also.

This should take care of it.
