This is machine is aproximatly 2years old. The options it gives are very limited right now. It starts and asks to enter f2 or f12 on the Windows page. I have set the CD om drive to boot first in the set up menu. Thats when it attempts to boot from the cd. Then goes to the recovery screen, load somefiles the Blue Screen.
Could the CD Rom drive be bed? Could Isave the XP disk to a usb flash drive and boot from that?
the xp install cd does not have any sata drivers - that's your problem.
you should dowload them from the manufacturer of the mobo, and put them on a floppy.
then they will be used dureing the install when you use the F6 key.
you can also make a slipstreamed install cd with those drivers :

I called Dell. I still have a waranty on the machine. They are sending a tech with a motherboard, SATA cables and a new hard drive.
I called the help line and we tried some things. I moved the new hard drive to different slots using the spare SATA cable. The hard drive was not rcognized in the set up menu. The assumption is that the either the SATAcables are bad or the motherboard is bad.
Thanks for all the advice !

Is it a SATA HDD?
If so, you will have to get the drivers and install suing f6 with the proper drivers.
