I have a 1TB SATA drive in an external IcyDock enclosure, and it gets hooked up by either USB or eSATA, I've used it on several computers. Windows XP Pro. There are several extra folders that were somehow created by the system with long names of letters & numbers. They appear empty but it denies me (admin!) access to delete them. Where do these come from and how can I get rid of them? I don't see this problem with the internal drives. It makes me think it's related to use with multiple computers or multiple connection methods (USB or SATA)

if they start with 5- then they are alternate users recycle bin's you have to set your folder options to uncheck simple file sharing in folder options | view and then select the security tab and then take control of the objects in question.
sounds like you have folder options 'hide protected operating system files" unchecked.
There is also a hidden file called $RECYCLE.BIN
The offending folders are named: 5d24195aed1111e1e6bb5dfad4

I do share some files on my home network so I wanted to know more before I unchecked it.
I do not see a security tab where you say to take control of the objects. When I try to delete them this is the message:
Cannot remove folder update: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
Maybe "folder update" is some kind of clue as to where this junk is coming from?
When I right-click & Properties on one of the bad folders, I have a security tab. But even if I check full control for administrators group, and apply and close, I still can't delete this garbage.
I wonder why it's on this drive and no others?
The Microsoft instructions for gaining control / ownership were about the same as suggested and also didn't work. An explorer extension free download called "unlocker" worked very nicely though. I would still like to know what exactly are "update folders" and why does only this drive seen to get so many.
