Data recovery services

I would like some suggestions on Data Recovery Services. I have a company I use, http://www.datarecovery.net/, with great results. However, I have a friend that needs professional DR services for a notebook HDD, but doesnt want to spend that kind of money.

Would like suggestions from experience, on some reliable, cost effective companies....

Located in Houston, TX. HDD can be mailed off no problem....

No google searches please....

Thanks!!

Bad....... Mechanical problems...
Yes, like Da5i said, you can first try to access the drive using a USB cable adapter like this one:
http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/pro_list/61

Then try some free software like:
http://www.runtime.org

Some trial software versions from one of the best DR companies:
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/data-recovery-downloads/

If the drive is failing mechnically, meaning that you cannot access it via the above means, then you're pretty much SOL if you don't want to pay a DR company to get it.

I know of DR hardware that will image( clone) damaged hard drives( firmware damage drives as well) from one drive to anther drive, but the cheapest is $3k which means that this is what the some DR companies are using to recover the data...if this type of device fails, then the drive has to be taken apart via a cleanroom etc.

With those options as the only options, you nneed to attach the drive via USB cable and then try using one of the software programs to read it, if no go using DR software; he has to pay a DR company, or forget it.
I wish I could help, but I don't have the hardware to work on hardware failed drives.  Is it clicking or not spinning up?  I'm not sure if I'd recommend trying the freezer trick that seems to have worked for some people.

It could also be the controller board on the drive causing it to malfunction.
Thanks for the info, but let me clarify....Let me clarify.

I need professional Data Recovery services, as I asked in my original question. I am fully aware of the available free/paid applications (actually used Ontrack to recover a few folders) like SPinrite, GetDataBack etc.... I dont need application DR services, I am looking for cost effective (and yes I know you get what you pay for - reference my first link...), but he doesnt want to fork out the cash for this one....

Just need suggestions on Professional Services for Physical recovery....
I I understand this is going to cost, but I guess you can say I am trying to find the lesser of all the evils....The Drive is clacing, dont have another HDD of the exact size to try switching the PCB....

The laptop was dropped from about 30" off the ground.....
"I'm not sure if I'd recommend trying the freezer trick that seems to have worked for some people."

The thought did cross my mind....   :^)
What is the model number?  I may have a spare to check the board out.

NP. I already know everything he has mentioned as well, which is why I didnt try the Freezer in the first place. You get to a point though, where you are trying to do it all on your own, without shipping it off, and you kinda start reaching......

:)

I know this is kinda of an impossible request, but I have to try.....
It's the same reason I keep buying Lotto tickets each week!
Did further research, and was unable to find something more reasonable than I already had.....

Thanks for playing.....
