If the password is blank then it won't connect

You can disable blank password restrictions by using a policy. To locate and change this policy:
Click Start, point to Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK to start the Group Policy Editor.
Open Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only.
Double-click Limit local account use of blank passwords to consol logon only.
Click Disabled, and then click OK.
Quit Group Policy Editor.
NOTE: By default, this policy is on (enabled).

Why do you need to login as the actual Administrator User account? Another Admin user should be sufficient.....

If you need to modify folder permissions, then boot to Safe Mode, and you will have the Security Tab available to modify.....

If I need to restore to an earlier time in the future I need to be able to log in as the Administrator. I would rather sort the issue out now while the Pc is working well. So would I be better off installing XP proffessional rather than XP home.

Doesnt matter if you install xp pro or not you will not have the ability to log into the admin account while running in regular mode.  The only time you can use this is when you are running in safe mode creating your own account with admin permissions will produce the same results and have the same permissions.  This is by design from microsoft the admin account can't be used in regular boot mode in any version of xp.

Sorry, but this statement couldn't be anymore WRONG, I am writing this from the administrator account on xp pro in regular mode.

Have to agree with dstewartjr, XP Professional does allow login in regular mode......

You can show it on the welcome screen, or hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to get a classic login box, and enter the credentials....
