Go to start>msconfig >Startup and remove all programs except the antivirus
then go to services, check Hide all MS. services and rstart the PC and try

Question
Reboot and shutdown slow
I just installed a new version of Window XP Sp3 and installed all updates from Microsoft and HP. When I go to restart the computer it takes up to 10 minites to complete. This also happens when I shutdown the laptop.
When I first click on restart all the icons go away and the items in the system tray follow. The computer then just sits at the screen with just the background showing and nothing else for about 7-10 mins. I am unsure why this is happening because everything else on this computer is running good. Please help. I am using a HP 530 laptop.

[Start] [Run] and type [gpedit.msc] then click [OK]
Drill down to [Computer Configuration] [Windows Settings] [Security Settings] [Local Policies] [Security Options]
Verify the proper setting (disabled) in the right pane under [Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile]
If (enabled) right click it, then click properties and set it to disabled.
Stop hanging problem at shutdown by eliminating the Welcome Screen that XP uses for logon. To eliminate the screen and revert to the legacy method of logon:
[Control Panel] [User Accounts]
[Change The Way Users Log On or Off]
Remove the checkmark by [Use the Welcome Screen]
All users will be required to type a username and password.
You can lower timeouts waiting for killing processes that does not respond to system shutdown call.

Might be the update and a conflict with a driver. Check for any driver updates and try installing those. It shouldn't help much but defragging after the install may help get some of the files lined back up. One thing i have noticed on a lot of laptops with less that 1GB of RAM is that SP3 is kind of a killer update. You may want to upgrade your RAM if you are running less than 1GB.
