I would make sure all firewalls are off, and also disable all Antivirus as a test first. You may also want to check Device Manager to make sure your wireless device is shown correctly. Also, restart your wireless router, then reboot the laptop. Are there any eventlog errors? Can you pick up wireless signals in another location? Some wireless adaptors can be set to "lock" to only types a, b or g - check that yours is not locked. You may also want to try updating the wireless drivers. Is this a new issue, or has it always done this? If it's new, what else has changed recently on the laptop? You may want to consider a system restore point.

Bad news...
One of my brothers had the very same problem, some time later it started to have problems to turn on the screen of the laptop. Then the screen did not work anymore.
After double checking everything, I took it to a repair shop specialized in laptops in Mexico (http://www.laptown.com).
As I entered the place, and briefly explained the problem, the clerk said:
"This is a known problem, which happens to some HP laptops. It is a factory problem, and happens because of overheating.". He then said that I had some options:
1) Claim the guarantee.
2) They had an experimental fix. I decided to go for it and it works fine now.
They say that HP laptops have some problems since HP bought Compaq.
