Unable to open .msg more than Once
Hi,
I have .msg files which are saved on the network share so that multiple people can view them. When Outlook is open and I open the .msg, the email opens up. If I close it and attempt to open another .msg. I get an error saying the file is open or I dont have permission. If I close and re-open Outlook. I can then reopen the .msg, but again only once.
What I notice is If i close outlook and then open an .msg, an outlook.exe process starts, when I close the .msg the outlook.exe remains.
Anyone got any ideas on how to solve this...its really annoying and surely MS Outlook isnt designed to do this!?
Thanks

Hello kwatt562,
The problem is that Outlook.exe remains open after viewing and closing the msg file the first time. You need to close outlook.exe as well as the msg file.
Does the problem occur with more than one user? If only one user, create a new Outlook profile for user.
Hope this helps!

Hello,
I have to agree with housssam_ballout on this one. Outlook normally puts a lock on anything that it accesses and while its in use. If you open a msg file on the network, Outlook will put a lock on it and if someone else is trying to access that message, it will say "File is open" to tell you that either the file is already open in your outlook session or someone else has opened it.
If you copy the msg file locally i.e. on your desktop, then you wouldn't have this problem.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick response
I have tried on multiple PC's and also copying the .msg to the users desktop, but I get the same thing, have also tried creating new profiles.
In reference to my second statement when outlook is closed and I open the .msg, the outlook.exe process is active but remains active even when .msg file is closed?
Closing all outlook.exe processes fixes the problem, but I cant believe MS outlook is designed to work that way

it could be like that in order to save memory
Hmm... do you have any other utilities that use MS Outlook, for ex - SnagIT or ActiveSync, etc?? Or any Outlook addons?? You can try uninstalling those addons and then rebooting your computer and trying the same process again. Let us know, what you get.

Thanks, We have only the default Outlook addins installed, and no other applications like google desktop or activsyc or itunes are installed on the PC's
Hmm... are you able to send us a HijackThis log to see what could be running in the background? Make sure that you do this while outlook.exe is still running in the background though.

I should have menioned this, but the message saved from outlook is a custom form. Now I have delted the cache in manage forms, but that doesnt help.
Was thinking about the memory issue proporsed by houssam_ballout and saw this on MS website

what do you think?

I recommend that you keep only one copy running in the memory

Hi Kenneniah, I think I understand what you are saying except if outlook is treating my .msg file as an actual message, then why when I close it and reopen it, I cant, unlike a normal message.
Agreed, that still shouldn't be happening. I'm just offering the template idea as a workaround.
I haven't been able to recreate the file in use with your circumstances however. Is your Outlook fully updated with patches etc.? Unfortunately I don't have a copy of 2003 to test with at the moment, but it shouldn't be leaving another process running. Just out of curiosity, if you change the email editor option to use Word does it still happen?

Thanks I will try that in the morning, I will also try saving a non custom form as .msg and see if brings the same problem. I may do as you say and tell the users to save emails as oft or html.

You were correct, the custom form was the problem, normal .msg open and close fine. If the custom form is saved as an .oft it will open and close without issue. Thanks a lot
if same problem occured, can you repair MC office installation?
