Question

I press "S" and a window pops up (WinXP)

When I press the "S" key on my keyboard, the "C:\Documents and Settings\%username% window opens. Makes it tough to type! :-) This happens in Word, Notepad, or even just from the desktop when nothing is open.

* Windows XP SP3
* I have swapped the keyboard.
* It happens when I connect to the PC remotely too, so it's not the keyboard
* I have checked Accessibility Options - turned them all off
* Keyboard set to US/English
* On Screen Keyboard shows the S key and layout as normal QWERTY
* I have removed the keyboard from Device Manager, rebooted, and it auto re-installs.
* Shift-S types a capitol S when CAPS-LOCK is off and a lower case s when CAPS-LOCK is on. It's the only way I can actually type a lower case "s"
* I checked "Add Remove Programs" for any kind of third party key mapping program
* There are no stuck keys - ALT, SHIFT, CTRL work normally and only the S key seems like it's mapped to open this window.

Any ideas how to turn this hot key off or fix this problem?

Quick fix might be to run SFC Scannow.
Just insert your OS CD while holding down Shift to prevent AutoRun.
After about ten seconds, release the Shift key.
Click Start and then Run
In the Run field type
SFC /Scannow
This takes about fifteen minutes and is designed to replace corrupted system files.

This could be a virus or a spyware...

- Download hijackthis
* Install, run and then attach your log here.
* Don't fix nothing till we have a look at your log.
( http://download.hijackthis.eu/HJTInstall.exe )

- Download and run Combofix.
Here's how the instruction, it's important that your antivirus/security shields are disabled.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Thanks for the replies! Still working on this. Won't be able to get back to it for a few more weeks. I'll post an update when I do.

SFC /scannow didn't work. I still haven't solved this, but I think a virus or spyware is the root of the problem... ??
