Question

Application will not display unless maximised

Asked by: culshaja

Hi,

for some weeks now when I open an application, it will not display unless I maximize it by right clicking on its entry in the task bar and selecting maximize. If there is not a maximize option then  I cannot get it to appear.

This does not happen all the time, it usually only happens a couple of hours after reboot. When it does happen sometimes I can kill the explorer process(es) and then start a new explorer process and it will sort itself out, but most times i have to reboot.

I have up to date antivirus and have run various spyware detectors using the latest definitions and nothing is found.

Help!!!!! This is driving me crazy.

James :-)

This is not a virus or spyware or any of them things.
What you have going on here happens in windows.
I remember it happening in NT4 server, 98se, 2k and XP.

Since this has been going on for quite sometime then I would not try no restore points
As you will most likely not get to the point that it did not happen, and if you did
It will only be a little while later before it would start back again.
Reason: The system was getting ready to do it anyway, So a restore to a previous state
Will only make it come back agian.

Suggestions to hopefully fix issue. (If this does not work, plan on Reinstall OS, BUT this should work)
Reinstall SP3 to the system.
Download XP SP3

Download the file, and install it.
reboot and test.

What this is going to do, is it will reset the drives to a state that they worked.
Once you have tested and everything is working fine.
Then go to Windows Update and reinstall all Updates After SP3.
Then test again.

Good Luck

All applications?
Did you use a shell replacement or some sort of desktop 'enhancers'?
What antivirus / antispyware did you run?

by: culshajaPosted on 2009-03-30 at 03:56:02ID: 24017575

Yes, when it happens its all applications.

I don't use any shell replacemnt or desktop enhancers. Those things drive me nuts and they interfere with my development software.

I use McAfee Enterprise and LavaSoft AdAware. I have also run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool.

James, have you tried to modify the settings for hardware acceleration, in the advanced propertied of your display settings?

by: carrzkissPosted on 2009-03-30 at 04:10:12ID: 24017662

Good
Do what I suggested and see if it fixes your issue.
It has fixed it several times that I have put up with it.
And since you stated: Development Software

I design Website in "Dreamweaver CS3" And I also design software in "Delphi"
And the Delphi programming is what sometimes caused the issue with my systems
Under Win2k and WinXP.

I would have to reinstall my system(s) ever 1-3 months.
I have some programming friends that install their systems once a week.
(They have an Image of the system and have to restore the image once a week
Due to all the curruption that accures when you develop software.)

Good Luck

Interesting, I have found that IE8 and explorer themselves are not always affected. I took hardware acceleration off completely and still the same problem.

After a bit more of a play about the applications that are always affected include Notepad and Task Manager. Usually ConText is affected but that seems to be ok for the moment so saying all applications are affected is not true. Sometime they all are and sometimes just a few are and then more seem to be affected as time goes on without a reboot.

Don't know if this has any relevance, but this seemed to start about the same time - when I click the Start button, the initial menu pops up but then hangs for a random amount of time before I can open any of the sub menus.

Your system is starting to become unstable if the start menu starts hangin withou a reply.
(Meaning: Corruption has accured in your system)

Do as I suggested and see if it will help you out!
If not, then plan / Backup / Reinstall

Good Luck

Humm.
Either you just gave me the points to end the question
(or)
You did not like the fact that my information was for you to reinstall your system.

Either way, a [C] is like a slap in the face here in EE.

I mean, you never even come in the follow up on the issue.
You never let me know what was going on.
The information that I provided is from experiance, of this same type of issue.
And you give me a [C] for my information.

I'm sorry that you feel that way, but I came looking for a solution so that I would not have to reinstall the OS which is always the fall back position. If I gave a solution that was reinstall the OS I would not expect anything more as that is always the catch all solution. It is in the same category as the 'reboot PC' solution. If you have ever worked on a helpdesk you will be well aware of the sort of apprecation that brings.

If you went to a mechanic with a problem and he said get a new car you wouldn't be that appreciative.

In the end I did have to reinstall the OS. That is not a solution, its avoiding the problem.

However, your rant did provide a few moments of amusement in my office this morning, so thanks for that.
