Question

Sharing stopped working SP2 XP

Asked by: List244

I have a printer as well as files shared over a workgroup. After upgrading to SP2(XP), all of this sharing stopped working. Network users can see me, however upon trying to connect it states that the network location does not exist. I can connect to myself and others, they just can't connect to me.

SP2 was the one with a whole lot of "security improvements". Did it per chance enable the WIndows Firewall? Try turning off the Windows Firewall and see if the situation improves.

SP2 was a very large re-write of XP, and specifically security was much changed. You should re-check firewall settings. Did the Windows Firewall get set/re-set without you being aware? And also, you should re-check that File and Print sharing is enabled.  Start there and let us know.

Both Security Center and Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) are off.

You are saying two things in your first post:
1. Print sharing has failed, and
2. Users can no longer connect to you.

You can't get Print Sharing working until the connection issue is sorted out.

Try connecting to the base machine by IP address and see if you can make a connection this way and also clarify for sure what is not connecting (printer only or printer and network shares both). Thanks. .... Thinkpads_User

So the problem is strictly one way? Them getting to you? I would still be looking for a Firewall issue. Just because the Windows Firewall says it is off doesn't really mean that it truely is. Go in to Services and make sure the Firewall service is stopped. Disabe it for the short term if you must. Do you have any third party virus software that could also have firewall capability?

Another simple test would be to go to one of the other workstations and ping your computer. See if you get a reply. Simple test. Try pinging it by name and then by IP address.

No network connection is working. Nothing can be connected, printer nor files. Also, when I said they are off, I meant those two specific services are disabled and stopped.

It all matches up:

DHCP enabled
Autoconfig enabled
Same DHCP server and gateway

File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled.

Also... People can SEE me, just when they try to connect it says I don't exist. I even changed my network name and it registered the change remotely. Still no connection.

by: jimbecherPosted on 2009-04-10 at 10:38:21ID: 24117426

I might have mis-interpreted your response from above:

"Times out on IP "unknown host" for computer name"

Was this the reply you got when you tried pinging you computer from another computer?

by: thinkpads_userPosted on 2009-04-10 at 10:41:19ID: 24117458

Several things:
1. Call the computer with the problem A. If A connects to the Internet and if A can see others, then Firewall still comes up as a major cause of this problem.
2. Just to be sure, when you changed the network name, do all computers have the same name. I use WORKGROUP, but just make sure they are all the same.
3. One person asked if you had disabled simple file sharing. Please let us know about that.
4. Do all computers have passwords with their user id's.
