XP Pro Wont Shut Down

Hi

Just built a brand new machine for my friend using the same motherboard, RAM and CPU as the ones I've got in my machine. I reinstalled Windows XP Pro onto a reformatted 60GB hard drive and XP installed fine. Next I installed SP2 so that I could use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy across the saved details from his old hard drive.

This all went very smoothly. I then installed Office 2003 and McAfee Total Internet Security 2008, again with no problems. I did have a bit of trouble installing the Realtek HD Audio driver tho and after a bit of faffing around, finally managed to get it installed so that sound could be heard from the speakers.

I then upgraded to SP3, and ever since then the PC wont shut down. If you select Shut Down from the start menu, then it will go through the motions of shutting down, saving settings, etc but the message "Shutting Down" stays on the screen. Eventually you hear what sounds like the hard disk shutting off (ie. your hear a faint click and the faint whirring of the hard drive stops) , and although on my PC this usually signals the monitor going dark, on my friends PC the "Shutting Down" message is still there. However, you can switch the PC off using the power button (one press will do it as opposed to holding it for 4 or 5 seconds) and when you switch it on again it boots fine (unlike a PC shut down incorrectly where it will ask if you want to boot into Safe Mode).

I'm puzzled as to what could have caused this. My PC is almost identical, except I'm using an nVidia 8600 and he's got my old ATI 9600XT, but other than that it's all the same.

Help please as this is driving me mad.
