Thank you for your lightning response. Yes, I have done what you suggest successfuly on Dell XPS laptops, but the BIOS of the Toshiba would not let me change the controller settings. So you are saying that F6 does not necessarily need a floppy, but van also be done via a disk or usb?

You can usually set the SATA controller to IDE compatible/legacy mode. If you set the SATA controller to IDE compatible (legacy) mode, you usually can not change to native SATA mode later.
It is recommended you download the drivers and tell the XP setup to load alternate drives. I believe you will have the opportunity during the initial setup loading to press <F6> to load the drivers, swap disks when prompted.
