windows xp double click not working

hi - when i double click any of my shortcuts on my desktop nothing happens - the only way I can do it is by right click open - or from the start menu - any ideas?

Your double click speed may be too high to too low.

Open Control Panel
Open Mouse
Check the double click speed and adjust. Test.

stefanomarco--What happens when you double click?  Any error message?  Does this apply to any files other than shortcuts (such as folders, files, etc.)?

This may be a stupid question, but have you tried rebooting?  This is exactly the sort of problem that rebooting sometimes mysteriously cures.

If that doesn't solve it, I'd be looking at your mouse settings (doubleclick too slow as others have pointed out).
