Not that is any consolation, but I think your laptop is toast... About the only thing I'd try is to get a BIOS update from Dell, and see if that might clear it up
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a D620 that the battery is just not recognized by Windows or in the BIOS. I have tried 3 different batteries from other identical laptops and they all do the same thing. Furthermore, the indicators on the battery itself show that the batteries are fully charged. I have checked the battery leads on the laptop and none of the pins are bent and the batteries seem to make a good solid connection when attached. Thoughts?

I booted up on battery only and within 5 minutes the battery died and the machine powered off. The battery indicator went from full lights to none. I am charging the battery completely to see if it takes a charge and if the laptop will run normally again. Otherwise, I'm back to square one. I am able to run on AC power with no problem so the machine is not a total loss. If I can figure this out, I would really like to use this as a normal laptop though. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I would suggest buying a new battery from Dell or a reputable vendor. I have a D630 and found out the hard way that the battery tends to die after about 16 - 18 months. In the end the battery would show the status as charged, but wouldn't keep the laptop powered up for any time when unplugged.
I replaced my battery and everything works fine now.
You can go to F2 to get to the BIOS. Here on the left side of the screen you can check the menu and navigate with the up and down arrow keys, because the mouse is not usable here. Go to the following options:
Battery info: here you can check the battery status (idle, charging, charged, not present) that way you will know if it´s being detected or not by the motherboard. You can also check the AC Adapter information, if it says "Unknown", there is a problem with it or with the motherboard, in that case, you could try another adapter. If the Adapter is listed properly showing the amount of watts, it´s probably working fine.
Battery health: here you can check the status of the lifetime of the battery, if the battery has reached the end of its lifetime, it will be listed here.
If the AC adapter is working properly and you have already tested with 3 other batteries, the problem is definitely the motherboard.
In other situation, you could have updated the BIOS, however, it is required for this procedure to have at least 15% of battery charge and the AC adapter plugged into the laptop, but in your case, the battery is not being detected, so do not try this because it could worsen the situation of the computer.
I would object to the question being deleted solely based on the fact that this information is extremely helpful and may help someone else having the same problem in the future. All comments were very informative and helpful in resolving my issue. In my case, I was simply using many faulty batteries. A new battery ordered from Dell ended up fixing everything. Based on that, I would recommend awarding points to mattaslin. However, GeekTechLab offered the most thorough troubleshooting suggestions and should also receive points, in my opinion.

About two months ago the battery in my laptop was no longer recognized. No errors. The battery still charges and I can run for about 1 1/2 hours, but the battery shows as "Not Present" in the Power Meter. At first the Task Bar would show that I was still plugged in to AC power even after I had disconnected (it no longer does this). When I run on battery the battery light on the laptop glows orange, and I have no idea how much battery life I have. When I plug back in to AC power it doesn't show that it's charging the battery (yet it is). I'm running Windows XP SP3, and this is the original Dell battery.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide!
SarvaDLG, to get assistance you really should post a new question.

I apologize for the obvious question but, can it still run on battery power?
