I should have mentioned that we tried taking ownership and that it just generates the same error -> "Access Denied"

Browse All TopicsWInXP Pro on a domain. While logged in as local admin -or- domain admin, the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip cannot be modified, deleted, or edited in any way. If you view the permissions tab, it's blank. Of course, this is preventing Windows and other apps (winzip, 7-zip, etc) from being able to associate with .ZIP files. Probably caused by malware or a virus, but how can you get access to a key with no permissions?

In the Permissions window, you can try to go to Advanced\Owner then take the ownership.
Then as a owner you will be able to add permissions, or just enable "inherit from parent " option that I assume is not enabled.
