it will go away when it has detected a clean boot, using the boot normally option..
If that fails to boot, it will redisplay this screen..

When you get into windows, check the event logs for errors..

Can you boot into Safe Mode...if you can try doing a system restore...you can only do a system restore if you have system restore enabled...another thing you can try is doing a XP Repair...using your XP disc...

I have tried to boot in normal and safe mode option and  over and over again and it keeps bringing back to to same menu.

Okay...if you have your XP disc handy...try doing a XP Repair...you should backup your data before doing so...just incase...however if you want to try to save your data...take your hard drive out and put it into another computer as slave...and you can try to backup your data that way...

ok then, so how are you shutting the computer down once it has booted?

by: theklapPosted on 2009-07-05 at 20:44:31ID: 24782385

boot from your windows XP CD.
Select recovery console

in the recovery console run chkdsk c: /R

this will run check disk and fix any errors on the drive and try to recover from them.
Then type in exit after it is done.

I was shutting in down with the shut down menu but my daughter was just powering it down instead of shutting it down properly and when she did that  it wont boot up since then

When powering a computer improperly all the time by just holding the power button on your computer for five seconds...or just by pushing the power button from your computer to power it down...would lead to this...the best way of shutting down computer is by going to the start menu...then shut down...

ok, but NOW, even after you shutdown properly - it still offers the boot menu?

Have you tried the last know working configuration option?

Just a little background:

Windows has a 'dirty boot' flag it maintains if the last boot did not complete properly, if that flag is set on boot, it will offer the menu, if not, it continues normally.

So you need at least one good boot to rid the system of the menu..
I'd boot, then check the event log for any errors, fix and retry..

Unplug the power cable from the PC for 15-20 minutes, sometimes this can flush dodgy information from your RAM. If not try XP repair as suggested, otherwise sounds like you'll need to do a fresh XP install.

Do you have a recent backup that could be restored?

Have you backed up all your files of the disk before trying a repair install - if it come to that..

i would try a repair install : http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
