Question

No Sound from HP Pavilion 04 P9828A

Asked by: cdplayer

HP Pavilion 04 P9828A-ABA 952X 70000TG101SAMBA

I am working on a computer that produces no sound.  This machine is several years old. There is no paper work or manuals but the client wants it fixed. I ran Balarc to find what the model number is so that I can try and find the drivers for the sound card. The following is what Balarc thinks the ID of the computer is:

HP Pavilion 04 P9828A-ABA 952X 70000TG101SAMBA
System Serial Number: MX23017781 NA600
Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6367
Enclosure Type: Desktop

I tried looking for this beast P9828A but I cant find drivers for it. Ive even used Driver Detective in hopes that it would be able to find and install the drivers, no such luck. I called the company that made the motherboard but they could not help me since this is an OEM product so they pointed me back to HP.

Ive been looking at the tweaks http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm number 371 - Restore Sound Windows Audio Service may be of some help but I am not sure.

I certainly am willing to listen to any and all suggestions at this point.
Thanks!

Is the Windows Audio service running?  Type SERVICES.MSC in the Run dialog box and hit Enter.  Then scroll down to get the status of that service.  It should be running and set to Automatic startup type.  If this isn't true, then double click it and make those changes.  If it is missing, or that doesn't work, then perhaps the Kellys_Korner registry tweak will do the job.

The system has an embedded Realtek AC97 sound system.

If all else fails, just put in a cheapo new sound card and bypass the onboard sound.

Nice feature hopeleonie!

The detection system sees my HP Pavilion 04 P9828A as a HP Pavilion 952x Desktop PC. I know that the states has different model numbers for the same product - so I am not too worried about that.

It didn't bring up any audio drivers for my HP. Some other updates but none that I am currently interested in.
Does that mean this PC is not in need of audio drivers therefore none were displayed?

The Windows Audio service is running and is set to Automatic startup type.
It looks like Kellys Korner registry tweak may be my next resort.

I am re-installing the drivers for the onboard Realtek AC97 sound system. I hope this works. If not I guess a sound card will have to be installed. I know that some motherboards when there is a sound card on board and a secondary sound card in installed the motherboard will shut down the sound card on the motherboard allowing the new sound card to kick in.

This is an old motherboard I have no manuals nor can I find any online. I need to know if I must manually shut off the sound card on the motherboard before the new sound card can start working.

Thanks cerrmj!!

I've installed the Audio drivers. Now I can't log-in to the computer. The client says that the computer is in a loop. The computer comes up with the start up options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking

and all of the other options. Its as if I pressed the F8 key to go into safe mode except the keyboard and mouse are not working nor are the arrow keys. I am on my way over there to see if I can stop the madness. I did create a system system restore point before doing the install. I just need the system to allow me to roll back what Ive installed but I have no keyboard and no mouse. Yikes!

I went to the client's building up to the tenth floor - when the doors of the elevator open the client was standing there freaking out! I had him direct me to the looping computer. I sat in front of the computer right when it came up in safe mode.

I instinctively went to the arrow keys which allowed me to select Safe Mode!!!!! He wanted to know how did I do that. I told him I hit the arrow keys. I showed him the arrow keys. Much to his dismay he said "I didn't know I was to use those arrows."

The arrow keys used  were the arrows on the numeric keypad NOT  the arrow keys.

I started to laugh uncontrollably I could not help it! While I was laughing I did apologize. Oh well!!!

Used my System Restore point to roll back the Audio drivers I installed. All is well.

In a few days I will attempt to repair this computer's sound by applying Kellys Korner registry tweak number 371 - Restore Sound Windows Audio Service.

I will report the results.

Cheers!

Sometimes there is a BIOS option to disable the onboard sound - sometimes not.  If you end up with a new sound card - you will have to go to control panel -> sounds and audio devices - and make sure the new sound card is the default device on the audio tab and voice tab.

Good luck.
