Browse All TopicsSuddenly windows explorer has started crashing whenever I try to select any .AVI file - it is crashing just when I highlight the file name not when I am trying to open it. It happens with any file in any directory on either of my two internal drives or my external back up drive.
So far I have tried:-
-Deleting the last AVI file I added through command prompt
-Deleting the Thumbs database files in case they were corrupted
-viewing in list view
-Mounting the same drives in Linux where I can both access and play all the files without a problem
- Uninstalling VLC media player and rebooting (as I recently installed an update for this from Cnet)
I am not sure where to look next for a fix to the problem - I have attached a screenshot of the error I get

I think it might be a codec problem. I'm not sure how to fix it but you can try a workaround by running
regsvr32 shmedia.dll
