BSOD STOP: 0x0000007E - can't go in safe mode at all

Hi - Lenovo Thinkpad T60.  Husband did XP service pack 3 on it and ever since it has refused to get past 0x0000007E (0xC00001D, 0XF78E28EA, 0XF78E27F4, 0XF78E24F0)

I see lots of things out there related to this, but most solutions require you to actually be able to get into safe mode to execute.  Any suggestions other than completely reinstalling XP?  I've checked the BIOS and it is current.  Ive tried changing the setting from compatible to AHCI in the bios set up.  I can boot from a USB drive to the Thinkvanrtage utilities and do a factory restore and I can boot from an Acronis cd so I'm really just makeing one last effort for a solution that would avoid the whole wipeout/reinstall routine.

You can download the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows at http://www.ubcd4win.com/ and build it per instructions.  Boot up using it then open a command prompt within it's operating system to run this command.... chkdsk/r
It should repair any bad sectors and what not.  If that does not work, use the registry fix wizard built into it and as a last resort you can reinstall Windows over it using the repair option.  
Note:  The repair option NOT the repair console which is prompted immediately upon starting.

I didn't actually end up using the UBCD4W as I had also started playing w/ the Fix-IT utilities from Avanquest and those were able to find a backup that the Thinkpad utilities couldn't see.  However, I think the ubcd would have done the same thing and I am keeping the cd handy for any future situations.  Thanks much for the help.
