Question

Hard drive space reporting incorrectly?

Asked by: wintensivetech

When I look at the properties of my C: drive it shows only 2 GB free space.  But when I show all files including system files and all and select everything on the C: drive and choose properties it shows over 30GB free.

How can I figure out what is taking up the space that I can't see?  Or is there another problem.  I have already done disk cleanup, and ATF cleaner and also chkdsk /f.  Otherwise system is running normal.

Could be Restore Points and/or Swapfile.
Run WinDirStat and see what it says:

Is this by chance a Thinkpad?     If so, the issue is the RRBackups folder -- you can recover the space by turning off the IBM Rescue and Recovery program (which stores a system image on the same partition as the image).

If it's not a Thinkpad, you may have a similar backup utility running -- having you installed any automated backup software?

Check your Recycle bin also !

garycase - NICE WORK!  But how do I turn it off.  I see I can disable the schedule and manually delete some of the backup sets it has saved.  But is there a way to just turn it off and free up all the space?

Its taking forever to just delete the first one...

Just disable R&R Backups program;  then change the folder view properties so you can see both hidden and protected system files ==> then you can simply go to the RRBackups folder and delete the files.

If you try to delete them from the R&R backup program while it's still enabled, it tries to create yet-another-backup of the system state as it exists before you delete the file -- this often won't work because there's not room for the backup !!     I'm NOT a fan of keeping a system image on the same partition as you're imaging -- a BAD idea !!

still working on this...standby.

OK. I found where to disable the backups....just delete the schedule.
I also found in the software where you delete existing backups - this freed up the space completely...NICE!

But I cannot access the RRBackups folder - it says access denied.  It is 0 bytes according to windows.  I don't really care though....the backup files are deleted and the space is back and the schedule is off.

Thanks!!

coral47 - you were on the right track, and thanks for the link...I'll use that utility in the future for sure. In this case I didn't have to because gary just knew about the Lenovo utilities.

Glad you got it done.    Sorry for not providing the specific details ... I didn't have access to a Thinkpad at the time.   In fact, I happen to have one today that I'm cleaning up for a friend ... so just for the sake of completeness I'll detail the exact process to solve this R&R Backups issue (not for your benefit, but for the benefit of anyone else who has this same issue and comes upon this question) ....

(1)  Open the IBM Rescue and Recovery program [Start - All Programs - ThinkVantage - Rescue and Recovery]  ... the exact path may vary on different Thinkpad models.

(2)  Click on Set Schedule and preferences and disable the scheduled backups (uncheck the "Schedule your backups" box).   Then click OK to get back to the main screen of R & R

(3)  Click on the Advanced tab and select Delete backups.   Then simply select all of the current backups and click the Delete button.    When it finishes, you're done :-)
