Windows XP Service Pack 3 problem

Hi
I have an XP machine that will not install xp sp3.
I have tried fixit , reset and subinacl. Nothing has worked.
The error message I get is 'the requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context.
On researching this, i found most people get this error with IE. So I have now uninstalled IE 8 and 7 and reset updates before installing again and got the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

In the first instance i would probably try a sfc /scannow as you have done the IE bits, i would also be inclined to run a chkdsk /F first - failing that i think a windows repair would be in order :)

You mentioned trying subinacl and reset. Did you actually follow the advanced troubleshooting in this KB article? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

And did you just "uninstall" IE7/8 or did you also try reinstalling it after?

Hi guys,
Already ran sfc and chkdsk. Actually doing it again now just incase as it was the first thing i tried.
Also tried both the methods from the forum and KB. It was from that thread that I noticed many people with IE7 having this problem. My problem is not with IE 7 it is with sp3.
I had already tried kb949377 but then unistalled IE8 and 7 to see if that helped then tried kb949377 again.
No good.

Reset the registry and the file permissions

easiman: you didn't say whether you tried to reinstall IE7/8 after uninstalling it. Even if your problem doesn't appear when you try to use IE, I'd still try that step.

synque, i didnt try to reinstall IE 7 before attempting the sp install. Will try that again now.

How are you installing SP3?

Download SP3 first the run it manually rather than from windows updates.

I'm still having no luck.
Have tried installing from update site and from a separate download.

Make sure you shut down or disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs before downloading SP3.  Turn off Windows Firewall.  Download only the basic and smaller SP3 file.  Unless you are downloading for a networked group, you don't need the big SP3 file.

Ended up reinstalling the operating system couldn't find another solution
