I'm configuring a standalone laptop with Windows XP. As an administrator, I have no problems logging in. I created a "user" account and received the following message when logging in: "Your account is configured to prevent you from using this computer". I think I've inadvertently set something wrong in the Group Policy but I can't figure out what.

i know you said this is standalone, but was this machine ever connected to a domain at all?
you shouldnt have to use GPO to set security on a standalone system, so im going with the assumption that this machine was setup on a domain and then pulled the global policy down to itself.
anyways, do the following...
1. Start->administrative tools->Local Security Policy
2. Local Policy -> User Rights Assignment
3. Look for DENY LOG ON LOCALLY
4. make sure the user account u created isnt in there. on a standalone XP machine the only account that should be there is GUEST.

Download the Group Policy Management Tool to trouble shoot your problem: http://www.microsoft.com/d
Run a report against the problematic machine and user account. This tool will display the results and the GPO settings that are effecting the user and machine. From this, you should be able to tell where the problem exists.
You may also consider rebooting the machin instead of just using the gpupdate... (depending on what policies your are editing)
