Question

0x0000050 & 0x0000007E Stop errors on XP

Asked by: LZ1

Hey Experts!!

Just recently my computer started freezing within 5 minutes of booting.  Looked at the error logs and it gave me something about a service that couldn't be started.  After researching that service, it shows it was tied to Rhapsody.  I tried a number of different things including virus/malware scans, registry repairs, ccleaner, etc. Nothing worked.
So I tried a repair install.  It froze after the reboot while Windows was still installing. For a while I was getting the Page fault in a non-paged area. (RAM, I thought)  Then a non-bootable image.  That's when I ended up going into the Windows setup and did a chkdsk and fixboot.

Now when I bootup it's giving me the BSOD with the page_fault_in_nonpaged_area error.
When I try to boot into safe mode it gets stuck on jgogo.sys and then throws the 0x0000007E error.  I've tried new RAM and even ran Memtest x86 on my old stuff and that came out clean.  The hdd is still healthy and shows up fine on other PC's when connected.  I have ran chkdsk, fixboot(not mbr) and tried multiple repair installs.

Is this a completely bad Windows install?  What's going on with the safe mode jgogo.sys file?  Is this recoverable or am I looking at a fresh install??? Please help.  Obviously I want to avoid starting fresh if I can.  I understand if I can't though.

are you using RAID 0? RAID 1? JBOD? or do you just have one of them set up as a secondary drive?

If you're stuck at the beginning of the Windows installation then you could try to flash the BIOS to the latest version.

boot from XP bootable disk > first repair (recovery console) > perform chkdsk c: /R and then install.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-11 at 05:51:02ID: 25068355

I'm not using any kind of RAID.  I have it disabled in the BIOS. I do have multiple drives, however for this case I have disconnected the other ones after it started failing to see if that was the problem.

I will have to check with ASUS to see if there is an updated BIOS and then flash it.  I have read that these mobo's have had problems using some of the onboard sata connectors.

Windows doesn't get stuck at the beginning of the install, it will go through the first part of the repair install(blue screen) just fine.  When it reboots for the first time the XP loading screen comes up and then it BSOD's on me.

This type of errors is usually related to hardware malfunction.
Try to look inside your  computer, press connectors harder etc.
Look especially at RAM and disk.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-11 at 06:23:14ID: 25068692

@qtworek: Thank you for the suggestions. I have eliminated the RAM as being a possible cause.  I've replaced and ran multiple Memtest x86 tests to ensure the RAM is not the issue.  What do you mean by look at the disk?  The HDD is healthy according to any other PC it's hooked up too.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-11 at 06:25:52ID: 25068722

You can change cables too...
Error 0x0000050 usually means RAM or disk problem.

Can you post your minidump here? Change the extension from .dmp to .txt.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-11 at 06:31:27ID: 25068786

I've never done a minidump before.  Can you tell me how?  Or give me a link?

I understand that the errors keep pointing to the RAM, but even after I've tried different kinds/brands of RAM I keep getting the same results.  Could it be the connectors on the mobo?

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-11 at 06:34:13ID: 25068829

Maybe... but this is rare case. Usually ram chips are the issue.
You should have c:\windows\minidump folder and some files inside.
Change the extension and post one or two here. You can begin with the newest ones.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-11 at 06:39:38ID: 25068890

Unfortunately I'm at work right now and will have to post the dump files as soon as I get home.

I will post back later with more results.

Thank you for your help so far.

by: awawadaPosted on 2009-08-11 at 06:58:10ID: 25069076

yes post a dump file as asked.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 04:45:12ID: 25077648

Update.  Last night I updated the BIOS as first suggested with no new results.  Same page_fault error.  So then I ran recovery console and did the chkdsk /r on my c: drive.  It took all night.  I rebooted this morning and it did show the XP loading screen, but then it just rebooted.

As requested, I do have the minidump file attached.  The only thing is, the minidump file is from June 30th.  I have no newer dump files that I can find.  I will keep looking.

Hopefully I'm getting a little farther.  No BSOD this morning, so maybe a repair install will work now????????????????????

More suggestions?

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 04:47:48ID: 25077664

Maybe it's OK now... we will see.
Your dump from Jun 30th has information about crash caused by nvnetbus.sys which means your nvidia drivers. You should look for an update.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 05:11:38ID: 25077828

Those NVIDIA drivers have been causing issues since I can't remember.  If I'm playing a game, I'll get a BSOD intermittently which throws the nvidia.sys drivers in the error code.

I'll see what I can do this evening when I get home.  I haven't found any current dump files unfortunately.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 05:13:12ID: 25077839

Upgrade of drivers is usually good idea. So maybe you can do this and wait (hope infinitely) for the next BSOD.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 05:14:36ID: 25077851

How can I update the drivers if I can't get into windows though??

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 05:18:57ID: 25077882

Right. I didn't understand properly your post about BIOS upgrade.
I'm still thinking your issue is related to hardware malfunction but do not know what more can you do to isolate it. Maybe putting your HDD into another machine will show you the truth?

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 05:21:07ID: 25077901

I do have the HDD on my current box connected externally.  Anything specific we're looking for??

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 05:23:24ID: 25077915

you should try to boot from this drive and look if BSOD appears again.
If so - there is an issue with your hdd or with configuration/drivers/files etc.
If not - you should dig deeper looking for your PC hardware malfunction.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 05:26:04ID: 25077937

Will do.  I'll report back with anything I find.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 06:29:45ID: 25078490

Update:

Just tried booting from the drive on a known good PC.  Got the 0x0000007E  error again.  I didn't try a repair install as of yet.  I will tonight when I go home.

Am I looking at a fresh install at this point???

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 06:32:55ID: 25078513

There's no situation you cannot repair but I think this is the fastest and simplest solution in this case...

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 06:36:37ID: 25078555

Before I entirely go that way, other than a repair install at this point what else could you recommend?? I know we've probably run the gammut, but I hate monopolizing any 1 expert's time.

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-12 at 06:39:03ID: 25078568

Try to repair after booting from installation CD and run OS in safe mode.
Then go to the reinstall. You can dig deeper and deeper for some weeks but reinstall will give you expected result in hours.
There's no problem with my time. If I have no time I do not answer ;)

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-12 at 06:41:28ID: 25078595

Thanks gtworek!  I'll do that this evening and update.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-13 at 05:08:29ID: 25087246

Update:  Tried another repair install and same BSOD relating to the 0x000050 error.

I think I'll throw Windows on another hard drive (a clean one) and try booting from that.

I'm just not sure where to start with hardware now.  I've tried new RAM as well as ran memtest x86.  Memtest said the RAM is good and the new RAM had no effect on the PC.  Where else do I go from here?

by: gtworekPosted on 2009-08-13 at 08:12:04ID: 25089245

Look at your CPU cooling and your power supply.
Sometimes these things cause strange errors.

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-13 at 11:34:38ID: 25091386

I'll take a closer look at all the hardware.  I even went as far as to switch out video cards. Albeit both are NVidia EVGA (8800GT for the main and a 7950GT secondary. No SLI).  Same.

I'll update later.  Thanks again qtworek for sticking around. :)

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-16 at 14:07:30ID: 25110483

Update:

I took a blank HDD and installed Windows.  It installed fine with the current hardware.  I even put back the original video card and RAM.  No BSOD or errors.

I put the old HDD in and used that to boot and same thing.  I know I'm going to have to start over and transfer my data, but can anyone explain this????

by: LZ1Posted on 2009-08-19 at 05:04:49ID: 31614158

Thanks for all your help.  I have purchased a new 1TB hdd and am starting over.  Everything has gone fine so far with no BSOD.
