Question

Multi-system Sysprep ghost image on NW9440 laptop blue screens and reboots

Asked by: jindalee

I have built a multi hardware sysprep image which I have been using on all the laptops we have in the organisation. The image has been working beautifully on every build of laptops we have (IDE and SATA) and install all the device drivers and joins the machine to the domain as I wanted it to. The problem that I am having is that I now have 2 SATA laptops (HP nw9440), which need imaging. Every time I use Symantec ghost to distribute the image to the machine they are giving me the BSOD and rebooting. I can get around this by disabling SATA Native Mode in the BIOS but Id obviously prefer to keep this enabled. I have managed to get this image working perfectly on a HP 8510w, nw8240, nw8440s Laptops which I believe also have SATA HDDs. I have compared the

I have tried building the mass storage drivers using the sysprep bmsd switch which populates the sysprep.inf file and also by using the BuildMassStorageSection = yes line as you can see from my sysprep file below. I have tried building the mass storage drivers on both the 8510w and nw9440 and when the sysprep.inf file was populated the content appeared to be exactly the same.

Does anyone have any idea of how I can get this image of mine to work on my SATA (nw9440) laptop?

Generally there are two sets of drivers:ATA and AHCI.  If the BIOS is set to native mode, you need the AHCI SATA drivers.  When you say BSOD, is it a 7B STOP message?  If so, that means you have the wrong driver loaded.

Just curious: why do you use %systemdrive%\ instead of C:\?  You could probably shorten your path up a bit by referring directly to the C: drive.

I use the DriverPacks.net mass storage controller drivers when building a universal image. There is a great how-to here: http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=1682

Depending on how you're feeling, you can either build it with all kinds of support (use all the driver packs) or use just the Mass Storage drivers. I've not run into any machines that didn't boot when I used these.

For OEM machines, I've only ever needed the AMD, Intel, or VIA drivers. I've attached the list of these INFs to save you time in case you go this route. (Generated from the latest MassStorage driver pack as of 8/13/2009)

List of AMD, Intel, and VIA inf files

by: jindaleePosted on 2009-08-13 at 18:03:22ID: 25094553

The BSOD is displayed for less then a second before it reboots so I have no time to read the STOP message so Im not sure what it says. I used a Utility Spotlight from the MS TechNet site which has a script called PNPPath.vbs which I ran to generate the contents of the DevicePath key in the registry which sysprep uses. The script listed the path to the drivers using %systemdrive%\ instead of C:\ which I copied into my sysprep.inf file.

I will try using the DriverPacks.net mass storage drivers and see how that goes. What I dont get is when I populate the mass storage drivers from the 9440 laptop using sysprep it works but when I use a sysprep file with mass storage drivers populated from another model SATA Laptop it blue screens even though the data generated looks exactly the samer?

by: d3rmasonPosted on 2009-08-13 at 21:19:07ID: 25095225

So, when you populate the mass storage from the 9440 laptop, you mean you are running sysprep -bmsd on that model, and then imaging to the other laptop? But in the latter case you're imaging to the 9440 with a universal image built on another machine?

If the above is true, then the first method is working because the specific 9440 drivers are already installed in windows and sysprep doesn't remove any mass storage drivers until you run sysprep -clean. In the case of the latter, sysprep -bmsd or the BuildMassStorageSection only adds drivers that are included in windows, which doesn't include the 9440 driver.

I know that that might not make sense, cause you're thinking "Well, how did windows load in the first place?", but this is the same error I had building a universal image on VMware and then deploying to a desktop with SATA, and that's the best answer I could find. (And the DriverPacks were the best solution I found to it, short of downloading chipset drivers for all the models of computers we have.)

Hope this clarifies your confusion. Sysprep is a nasty little monster when it comes to drivers.

by: jindaleePosted on 2009-08-13 at 21:42:04ID: 31615173

Thanks for that. What you have said makes sense. I believe the only answer would be to download a driver pack and include additional drivers In the sysprep folder. It looks like a lot of work for 1 model of laptops in which we only have 2 unit so I reckon I will leave it for now and just create a separate image for this model. I will come back to it later if I run into the problem again.
