The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows Security Update (KB973507) knocked out our ability to use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 Viewer Control

Asked by infotechCDI in Windows XP Operating System, Microsoft Applications

We have a custom Visual Basic application which uses the MDIVWCTL.DLL file provided by the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 Viewer Control, to make a scanned image available to our end user.  This has been working perfectly up until a couple of days ago.

After extensive troubleshooting we have determined that the application of the Security Update for Windows XP (KB973507) causes our application to crash and no longer be able to call the MDIVWCTL.DLL file to display our image.  Unfortunately rolling back the updates is not an option because on systems that are current with updates there are 5 other updates that are dependent on this particular update (KB956744, KB960859, KB971557, KB971657, & KB973869). In addition the PC running our application is not always under our administration so I can't image any of our clients would welcome the fact that we would be asking them to remove security patches.

We know for sure that update KB975307 is the cause.  This has been proven by taking an un-updated system, and applying updates from the past month one by one until the application stops working.  It stopped working after the install of KB973507.  I was unable to uninstall this update since I had none of the other dependent updates and as soon as it was uninstalled the application started functioning again.

What is the best way to approach this issue?  I would imagine since the control is a Microsoft Product that they should be able to (and would want to) address any issue that causes it to stop working.  However, since this is the first time encountering such an issue I thought it would be best to post it here to get the experts' advice.

Thanks in advance.
