Question

Unable to Shutdown computer

Asked by: pzozulka

I have a user who is unable to shut down her computer.  Here's the exact description. I've seen this before, but don't remember/know how to fix this. We don't have any group policies preventing shutdowns or anything like that.

I go to Start.  I hit Shut Down button.  Nothing happens at all.  Just sits there.  Nothing comes up.  I dont know any other way to shut down my computer other than to then manually shut it off.  Thats my problem.

Sounds like there is an application stopping the shutdown.

Can the user boot to Safe Mode (restart PC, hit F8 before the Windows XP logo screen, login as local admin), then try and shut the PC down?

Another option would be to clean boot XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434) and try to shut the PC down - unfortunately - the only way to find the troublesome software is to add in a tick to the startup programs one at a time in msconfig until the computer shuts down properly.

As a "quick fix" - try "shutdown -s -t 5 -f" after logging on. If this works, then the chances are there is a program running at login, or afterward that is causing the issue.

Right click My Computer then click Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
Expand the entry called Computer.

If the entry is 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC' you're all set. If it says 'Standard PC' the computer BIOS was not detected as being ACPI capable.

Then check if power down after shutdown is turned on:

Click [Start] [Control Panel] [Performance and Maintenance] [Power Options]
The Power Options Properties Property Sheet will open.
Click the APM tab and check the box to [Enable Advanced Power Management Support]

You might just want to a small batch file you can place it in the C:\

Open notepad.

type the following instructions (you can copy and paste):

@echo off

cls

shutdown.exe /s

You can call it Close.bat and save it C:\ (make sure you can see the extension as .bat)

Make a shortcut and place it on your desktop. Change the icon to the red shutdown icon.

This is a temporary solution while you figure out what's going on.

For a more permanent solution try creating a new profile....you can call it test and see if the shutdown works properly.
