Question

COPY USER PROFILE HANGS...

Asked by: 4millie

I am trying to copy a local user profile (computer\username) to a domain user profile (domain\username) on a Windows XP SP3 workstation.  After opening SYSTEM PROPERTIES, ADVANCED, I click on USER PROFILE SETTINGS, I highlight the local username and click COPY TO.  I then browse to the domain username directory... and select "Permitted to Use" CHANGE button.  At this point I type in the domain username (and check name) and then click OK.

Everything "appears" to be working fine... and I get an hour glass like it's perhaps copying in the background... but there is no "progress bar"... and this thing has been copying for quite some time (over an hour!).  In previous attempts, SYSTEM PROPERTIES displays NO LONGER RESPONDING, but this time it's not doing that... it's just chugging along.  I'm assuming that this is because this particular user had quite a bit of files under his local username... but how is one to know if this is really "working" in the background?  Any recommendations?

Lastly, if I end up having to move his files manually, what is the fastest way to change the permissions on ALL his files being transferred over?

Please advise.

Well the first thought is how big is the folder/dir that you are moving? If you have a PST file, or large docs in there it can take a considerable amount of time to move, depending on the network setup.

As far as permissions you just go to the security settings, configure as needed and then apply the settings. This can take a few minutes too if there are a lot of files and /or directories.

There are quite a bit of files... almost 2GB worth!  But the question is... How do I know if the computer is still truly copying?  Since there is no progress bar, is there a "service" or something that I can investigate?

As for permissions, I know how to change the permissions of a file or directory, but I'm asking for the fastest way to accomplish changing 2GB worth of files.  ;-)

2GB worth of data can take a considerable amount of time, as far as progress... not that i am aware of, the progress bar will not display as it does not know the size of the directory, however if it (the system) figures out and calculates the size of the dir then it will display an estimated time.

As for permissions that is the only way that i know how to change them, and on the large directories will will take some time.

Why don't you put them on a roaming profile? this would manage the permissions and copy the data as needed/updated vs all the data every time.

by: 4milliePosted on 2009-08-19 at 12:11:27ID: 25136168

Unfortunately, roaming is not an option.

You should let the process go.

How about folder redirection, is that an option you could consider?
Application data, My documents, start menu and desktop?

If you use outlook, you would need to alter each user's outlook configuration to move the PST files from %userroot%\local settings\application data\...
to %userroot%\application data\
This change to the users via GPO could automate the copying of the files in these directories onto the server to which the folders are being redirected.  People with a large amount of data would experience a slow logon following the application of the GPO.

This can be done through GPO by adding the office administrative templates.
You will not have the full scope benefit of a roaming user, i.e. favorites, but some application settings and data will be accessible from any computer on the network.
The added benefit is that these files will all be on a single server that can be regularly backed up versus having to backup individual workstations.

Have you tried to just copy the User Profile from the Docs and Settings folder?  At least, you might go into it and move the larger items (probably the My Doc folder) and trim the profile down a bit.  Then you can just move them back in once your copy process is done..

Just a thought..

Okay... problem solved.  I ended up letting the "profile copy" just run... and it took 4 hours to complete!

in the meantime, I also discovered that if I copied all the "My Document" files to the new user's profile, I cound change the permissions on ALL the files by right-clicking the top parent directory, select properties, select Security tab, click Advanced button, and adding the new username to the permission entries!  This change includes subfolders as well.

Thank you for your help.  Your solution pointed me in the right direction, but could have included a bit more "detail" or instruction.
